I want to smell dark matter
New BBC1 drama (don't call it sci-fi, you'll scare people!) starting tonight. Will probably be shit because when has the BBC ever done good sci-fi (sorry, drama) other than Doctor Who? And the reviews of the first episode have been mediocre and it all looks a bit grey. BUT HEY, THE LICENSE FEE PAYS FOR IT, SO WE HAVE TO WATCH AND COMPLAIN ONLINE AFTERWARDS, RIGHT?

I am looking forward to sneering about this online (here)

EARTH 2 WAS BETTER.

"They're clapping. Everyone's clapping." Cringeworthy bad. All the scenes with the ship captain talking to the president were.

And they killed Apollo in the first episode? His character was too over the top evil to be interesting anyway. Maybe we were supposed to be surprised that he died?

Who thought it would be a good idea to have a really bad child actor repeat a poem several times in the episode in a really annoying voice?

There were some ideas that could have been good with a better script, but the script was just clunky and formulaic. Don't know if I'll watch anymore.

I liked how all of you were all "OKAY WACKY, WE'LL WATCH IT WITH YOU!"* but in reality none of you fuckers did and I had to suffer alone.

*actual quote

I missed the first ten minutes because I forgot it was on, saw the next five minutes then turned it over.

I know I didnt give it much of a chance, but what I saw seemed very boring.

I am afraid I really dont watch much TV, but I can pretend I watched it, read a quick review then sneer about it online.

God knows, that is what half the internet does anyway.

Soon I will be able to be rude about things with almost miniscule knowledge. Then I can fulfil my ambition and be RICHARD HAMMOND (not a real hamster)

Should I watch episode two tonight?

Jamie banner might cOme back as a zombie

Naked zombie?

I watched it earlier and I'll watch episode 2 as well, really because I don't have anything better to do tonight.

It had some good ideas... I liked the idea of loads of ships fleeing Earth and the majority of them being lost.

But I didn't actually understand what the deal was with Jamie Bamber's character. He, along with others went out to the frontier to see what there was to see - fair enough. But why was he pissed off? Besides the "POSSIBLE MULTIPLE PERSONALITY SYNDROME" thing that was very subtly rammed in our faces at one point.

I found his death plain annoying. It seems to be a thing nowadays in dramas. They hire a big name actor, then kill them off in the first episode because a) it's cheaper than actually keeping them in the show and b) it's SHOCKING.

Except it's not shocking, it's just fucking annoying when you're an audience member who was looking forward to seeing a favourite actor on tv on a weekly basis.

It worked in Spooks with Lisa Faulkner because she was cute and we'd had time to get used to her, but they've since done it in Stargate Atlantis (with thingy from T2) and V (with thingy from Firefly) and now this (thingy; BSG).

Anyway, to sum up, it was kind of dull and hard to follow (but dumb at the same time!) but I'll watch more anyway because it has actors from other shows and I think something might blow up at some point.

Tonight's episode was actually pretty good. They explained why Jamie Bamber's character switched sides and they established a few of the others a bit better, particularly Fleur, who is the conscience of the group ("hmm, maybe we could call her 'Eva Hart'? Or 'Flower Powers'? 'Emotional Centre Girl?' How does that sound? No? Hmm. Ooh, what about Fleur! Subtle!"). Some more subtle writing implied that Cass may be gay, or have previously been a woman. Or something. He has a secret, Fleur "isn't his type" and he's named Cass for fuck's sake.

They seem to have forgotten about that adorable kid they orphaned in the first episode. Oh well, he only talked about tigers all the time anyway.

I'm looking forward to next week's. Just hope it doesn't fall into the trap Survivors had of having one or more characters abducted every week and the rest of them mounting a rescue. Because that's what's happened in both episodes so far.

Tonight's was a bit better. At least I could tell what as going on. The new guy is so obviously their attempt at doing Gaius Balter, except he's blatantly just completely evil whereas Baltar had depth. I kind of liked the blond teenager and Irish guy scenes becasue they seemed a bit more normal than the other characters. The Clones are kind of dull as bad guys though. Also there seemed to be a lot of walking around and it wasn't as exciting as the walking around on Lost. And Hermione Norris really can't move her face. Also Fleur's voice is annoying (she sounds Scottish so it's okay for me to find it annoying.)

The "NEXT TIME" previews are really exciting but you can tell the episodes won't actually be as good.

Yeah, the walking scenes look nice, but they're less purposeful than LOST's. Maybe they'll encounter a space polar bear next week?

Heh, I hadn't picked up on the similarity with Baltar attempting to steal that old lady's ticket in the BSG pilot. Except he did the right thing in the end!

Sometimes I have to look away from the screen when there are closeups of Hermione Norris. Her character's actually a lot better in this than in Spooks and shows that she can act (in Spooks she played a robot basically), but she looks really odd sometimes.

The scene where the Irish guy was really excited about getting to sleep with her wasn't very believable.

Not only the stealing the ticket but he seems to be some kind of cult leader who is possibly only in it for the clunge...

Also, he's called Julius Berger, which doesn't sound at all like Gaius Baltar.

He's basically Baltar during that phase when he had a cult, grew some balls and got some say in matters even though nobody trusted him.

Yesterday's episode had some other BSGish things, with a mentally disturbed black guy (reminded me of Adama's friend who'd been captured by the Cylons from "Hero") and the discovery of some sort of mystery involving pre-historic bones.

The pacing's a bit slow and I've not really warmed to any of the characters besides the Irish guy, but it could be a lot worse. It could be The Deep.

Yeah I watched the two episodes this week because I had nothing else to do or watch. My coping stragey involves changing the channel anytime Hermione Norris is on the screen. She's awful. The black trigger-happy guy is a pretty terrible actor too. Fleur kind of looks like a BBC budget version of Kate from Lost.

Did you notice how they casually mentioned that one of the two guys going out to the tower on Monday's episode was gay...then he died five minutes later.

Was he the only gay on the planet?

lol, probably. I did notice that and immediately pictured the threads on IMDb that would complain about typical BBC box checking. IS THIS WHAT WE PAY OUR LICENSE FOR?!

It was silly, though. A blatant red shirt from the second he appeared on screen, so when they said he was gay it was like "ok, we'll be PC and have a knob jockey, but WE'RE NOT KEEPING HIM!"

What was the point of the man and woman who were getting married anyway when we'll never seen them again...
