USA Cycling picks road race team trying to end 40-year drought

Magnus Sheffield and Matteo Jorgenson will join Brandon McNulty on the U.S. cycling team for the Paris Olympics, giving the American contingent perhaps its best chance in four decades to win a road race medal. McNulty had already qualified for the team by winning the national time trial championship earlier this year. The big question was who would join him. USA Cycling had to weigh which of its potential riders would be on the start line for the Tour de France on June 29 then pick the team best suited for the Olympic course that begins and ends in Paris. The announcement came Friday, five weeks before the opening ceremony. The U.S. has struggled in the road race since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, when Alexi Grewal won the men's race and Connie Carpenter and Rebecca Twig went one-two in the women's event. Meanwhile, European countries have dominated the medal table, though Richard Carapaz of Ecuador used a stunning attack to win a surprising gold in Tokyo.

"Because after putting us in sh*t it's up to them to bathe in our sh*t," the website declares. It also features a calculator that lets users input how far they live from central Paris, and then calculates when they would need to defecate in the river for the waste to end up in the heart of the capital at noon on June 23.

Kristaps Porzingis schedule for surgery, to miss Olympics

Porzingis suffered a torn retinaculum and dislocated posterior tibialis tendon in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on June 9. He missed Games 3 and 4, but he returned in Game 5 as the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks to win the title. A timeline for Porzingis' return has yet to be determined, but he said earlier this month that the recovery process could take a "few months." Porzingis, who was acquired by Boston after the Celtics lost in the 2023 Eastern Conference finals to the Miami Heat, averaged 20.1 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Celtics during the regular season.

Incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg headlines USA Select team

A year from now, incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg could be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, and he's already adding to his résumé. USA Basketball has invited the 17-year-old to practice against Team USA ahead of the Paris Olympics. Flagg was one of 15 players named to the USA Select Team on Friday, a group that will help the national team prepare at a training camp next week in Las Vegas. There's a long history of players from the Select Team eventually joining the national team down the line, including current players Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, who served in the role in 2021 before the Tokyo Olympics. Flagg, a 6-foot-9 forward from Newport, Maine, is the first collegian to play for the Select Team since 2013, when then-college stars Doug McDermott of Creighton and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State were on the squad. The team will be coached by Magic coach Jamahl Mosley.

Simone Biles wins all-around at trials, makes Olympics again

Simone Biles is heading back to the Olympics. So are some of her friends. The gymnastics superstar earned a third trip to her sport's biggest stage by cruising to victory at the U.S. Olympic trials on Sunday night, posting a two-day all-around total of 117.225 to clinch the lone automatic spot on the five-woman team. Three years removed from the Tokyo Olympics -- where she pulled out of multiple finals to prioritize her safety and becoming a touchstone on the importance of mental health in the process -- Biles returns to the Games looking perhaps as good as ever at 27. Biles will be a prohibitive favorite to bookend the Olympic gold she won in 2016, though there is plenty to work on before women's qualifying July 28. She backpedaled after landing her Yurchenko double pike vault, a testament to both the vault's difficulty and the immense power she generates during a skill few men gymnasts try and even fewer land as cleanly. Next stop, Paris, where the Americans try to return to the top of the podium after finishing second to Russia three years ago.

2024 Olympic gymnastics trials: Biles leads Team USA

It all came down to this. On Sunday night, the U.S. women's gymnastics Olympic team was announced, after a heartbreaking week that included injuries to front-runners Sky Blakely. Kayla DiCello and Shilese Jones. Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera were named to the team, with Leanne Wong and Joscelyn Roberson the traveling alternates.

The crowd was electric in the final rotation -- and the gymnasts matched the energy. Simone Biles started off with her signature triple-double mount on floor, closed with a double layout and even with a step out of bounds earned the highest floor score of the night. She looked relieved -- and a little exhausted -- at the end. She and Suni Lee shared a hug after Lee finished her night on vault with a Yurchenko double full. Tiana Sumanasekera and Joscelyn Roberson competed one after another on floor, and each drew the crowd in to their performances. The pair have been incredibly consistent throughout the entire competition, and both have a case for a spot as alternate or team member. Jordan Chiles solidified her own probable spot on the team with her floor routine, which had the crowd on its feet and her in tears at the end.
