You're reading too much into it. Any time a person dies in a tragic or heroic fashion, the media always tries to find some relate like their heroic or tragic past. I recently heard a story about some guy who died in 9-11 after having survived the first attempt in 1993, and another who died during Katrina who was a survivor of the tower collapse. Any time someone survives a big media tragedy, that becomes almost like their title. "9-11 survivor" "Katrina survivor" and "Holocaust survivor" mean the same thing, they're trying to play up the irony of it. Lived through this, killed by that.
Hell, Molly Brown was "Unsinkable" for the rest of her damn life because she took a lucky seat on the lifeboat about ninety years ago this week...you're absolutely right that they're capitalizing on for ratings, but it ain't a Jewish thing, it's a sympathy angle.
