Ben Elton was funny in the 80s, he had already started to lose it in the 90s, and by the naughties he was writing musicals with Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The man who once rebelled against the system now is the system.

I would argue Ben Elton was NEVER funny in person. Even on Saturday Night Live he was crap. You could argue Harry Enfield was once very funny in person, but I would struggle with Ben Elton.
