The only reason why Luke gets attacked by the Wampa is because after star wars Mark Hamil had a car crash that through him through the car windscreen, scaring his face, and causing his jawline to change after needing wiring up.

The disfigurement could be explained away by the injuries from the Wampa, and not spending enough time in the bacta because of the attack on echo base.

Lucas talks about that in the EWB commentary, though he says the Wampa attack was in the script anyway but it gave them a good excuse for the scars.

Yeah, but Hamil had his crash long before the script was wrote, even before the holiday special, thats why he was made up like a whore in that.
