He and the sonic youth people were creating an infernal, formless racket on their guitars. There was also a bunch of fucking around with electrodes, nails and screws on a sheet pan, and other such tricks.

Saw Sonic Youth at Voodoo Fest back in the day, eh alright. Least favorite of the day, but considering they were up against the Beastie Boys, Greenday, The Killers, and the Pixies, not really their fault.
