Saw "Super 8" and "Green Lantern" over the weekend

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
Super 8 was excellent. It reminded me not only of the films of my early youth, but also of the joy and excitement that summer vacation brought, with its limitless possibilities. The cast was great, especially young Joel Courtney, a complete newcomer, and Elle Fanning who is an incredible young actress for any age, let alone 14. I recommend it highly, and give it a grade of A.

I took my 7-year-old to see Green Lantern on Sunday morning, and, surprisingly, I really, really liked it! If you're not a fanboy it might be a little boring, but I thought it hewed extremely closely to the source material. Seeing OA, the Guardians, Killowag, Sinestro, and the rest of the GL Corps was awesome. They also had a couple of in-jokes,
like the fact that Amanda Waller is in it, and that Carol Ferris' call sign is "Sapphire"
. I think the movie made good use of the rings, showing some decent constructs. I hope they make a sequel, as the action could be ramped up a little. Overall, a very good flick, I give it a B.

I'd give it a B- or a C+. I think I liked Thor better.

(And I saw both movies in 3D)

Haven't seen Thor. I refuse to see any movie with Natalie Portman; her ugliness is off-putting.

I wouldn't say she is as hot as Wacky makes her out to be, but Natalie is far, far, far, from ugly.

I agree with you for the most part. Saw Thor in Imax 3D and it was awesome. Saw Super 8 in Imax and it was awesome. Saw Green Lantern in 2d and it was really good. As I'm not a comic book fan I didn't have any expectations for Thor or Green Lantern and still found both of them to be exciting and engaging.

I give Thor and Super 8 each an A+
and give Green Lantern an A.

Super 8 is also a movie I would recommend as suitable for the 8 and up crowd. The train wreck and that scary monster might be a bit much for under 8.

Thor and Green Lantern for the most part are kid safe but there are some scenes that may be too violent or are inappropriate sex-wise for the younger kids.

And, Natalie Portman is a beautiful person physically. Never heard anything about her to make me think she isn't a beautiful person in any other way.

Obvously, I was being ironic.

I thought it might have been something you learned to say when Laker_Girl was pregnant and super hormonal and if she saw you looking at Natalie Portman she might have cut your head off or something. Pregnancy does stuff to women, as you probably know very well.

I'll watch them later.

As much as I enjoy BDM's reviews of fashion, film and stage, it would take some sort of biochemical agent to make me go an see Green Lantern.

I go and see films with my boys (who are now 11 and 13) and when they were younger I remember giving films a lot more leeway as they made my boys happy. I even remember considering "jumper" a bit dull, but good enough when I saw it.

In fact, it is an abysmal movie.

The general feeling on Green Lantern seems to be mediocre from the three opinions I've read.

I actually quite enjoyed Jumper, but that's probably because I watched it on tv rather than buying three tickets for it. I doubt I'd feel the same about Green Lantern, though. Just looks like a mess.

I want to see Super 8, but in their wisdom the film Gods have said that, as a well-liked summer blockbuster film that opens in June in the US, the UK shouldn't ever get it until August. Because... um... because!

Thank god for film piracy!

Save your money. See Thor or wait for Captain America or The Avengers.

I might watch The Avengers, but I'm looking forward to Transformers (in 3D IMAX, hopefully!) and Super 8 way, way more.

But Transformers 2 was the worst movie ever made.

I was gonna try and get free tickets to Transformers 3 but I'm poor and unemployed and due to the price of gas my mom is limiting the number of movies and events and can attend this summer. So I'll wait a year or so until it shows up on HBO.

Fuddlemiff has tickets to Spiderman the Musical, he also can't understand why there wasn't a sequel to Captain America.

The Avengers was one of favourite tv shows as a child. It's a pity to see how haggard Diana Rigg looks nowadays, but I'm buoyed at knowing her legacy will continue and we can all move on from that awful remake from a few years ago!
