Serena Williams loses 2nd-round match in Toronto after indicating playing career is winding down

Serena Williams wore her game face when she stepped out into the stadium for her first match since telling the world she is ready to leave professional tennis. Greeted by a standing ovation, the 23-time Grand Slam champion didn't smile. She didn't wave. She took a sip from a plastic bottle as she walked in. Some folks in the crowd captured the moment with the cameras on their cellphones. Others held aloft hand-drawn signs -- oh, so many signs -- with messages such as "Queen'' or "Thank you.'' She did not state precisely what her last event will be, but did make it sound as if her final farewell will come at the US Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York. Williams has won the singles title at Flushing Meadows a half-dozen times -- first in 1999; most recently in 2014 -- to go along with seven championships apiece at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, plus three at the French Open.

Serena Williams announces she will retire after 2022 US Open

Serena Williams, one of the greatest athletes of all time, announced on Tuesday that she will retire from tennis following the 2022 US Open at the end of August. In a peice she penned for Vogue, as well as in a post on Instagram, the 23-time Grand Slam champion said that while she still loves tennis, she's ready to move on to new things. For the last five years, it was no longer a question of if Williams would retire, but when. In 2017 at age 35, she won Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant with her daughter, but in September she needed an emergency C-section to give birth. She developed a pulmonary embolism following the operation, which kept her in bed for six weeks.

"Serena’s the greatest female athlete, to me, in the history of sports. I don’t care who you could come up with. She’s one of the greatest athletes period – male or female. She’s put herself along the likes of Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, whoever you wanna say … She’s 40 years old. She’s done everything in tennis. She’s got nothing to prove," McEnroe said.

Serena Williams run in Cincinnati short-lived, as Emma Raducanu post Round 1 win in straight sets
Williams struggled early in her first career meeting with Raducanu, 19, and trailed 4-1 before fighting back and winning three of the next four games. But the second set was all Raducanu, who will next face two-time major champion Victoria Azarenka, and she closed out the match in 65 minutes.
Serena Williams likes it up the arse, apparently.

True story, blackfoot. Funny what you can learn from a few degrees of separation.

I imagine one would require serious endowment to fully penetrate the mass of black chick ass.

Serena Williams to face No. 80 Danka Kovinic as U.S. Open draw announced
While Williams has spent more than 300 weeks at No. 1, her lack of activity has contributed to a slide; she is 410th this week. That meant she would not be seeded in New York and could have been placed anywhere in the field and against any player.

Williams has won the hard-court tournament in Flushing Meadows six times.
Kovinic has never been past the second round in four appearances at the US Open.

Serena Williams exits US Open as one of the greatest ever, but her legacy goes far beyond her titles won

Twenty-three years ago, Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam title here. On Friday, she said her goodbyes in the same place, in front of a sold-out crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams, 40, shared her intention to retire after the US Open in an essay in Vougue last month, and has been given a hero's farewell in her matches since. She admitted she had mixed feelings about the decision and knew it would be difficult to walk away from the sport that had defined much of her life. She began her professional career in 1995 as a 14-year-old. In 2022, Williams walks away from the game with 858 tour victories, 73 singles titles, an Olympic gold medal and 319 weeks at No. 1. Together with Venus, she won 14 major doubles titles and three Olympic golds. Williams' 23-major mark remains the most by a player, man or woman, in the Open Era.

Margaret Court defends tennis record in wake of Serena Williams' farewell, says admiration not reciprocated

Australia's Margaret Court believes she doesn't get as much credit from the tennis world as she deserves for her 24 Grand Slam singles titles and that Serena Williams doesn't reciprocate her admiration. Williams -- who holds 23 Slam titles, one shy of the record Court set from 1960 to 1973 -- was feted in many quarters as the greatest tennis player of all time in the wake of what is expected to be her final appearance at Flushing Meadows after recently telling the world she is ready to start "evolving'' away from her playing days. Williams, who will turn 41 this month, was eliminated from the US Open in the third round by Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night, a match in which she staved off five match points to prolong the three-hour-plus proceedings. "Serena has played seven years more than I did," Court said. "I finished in my early 30s. People forget that I took two years out. I first retired ... when I was 25, thinking I would never return to tennis.

Serena Williams to become fourth woman to host ESPYS in July

Serena Williams is returning to the sports spotlight to host The ESPYS in July. The retired 23-time major tournament winner will be the fourth woman to helm the show honoring the past year's achievements, athletes and moments. The ESPYS will air July 11 from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird and Russel Wilson co-hosted the 2020 show, which was virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Williams won 12 ESPYS during her tennis career. The ESPYS will follow the July 10 premiere of "In the Arena: Serena Williams," an eight-part series chronicling her career that airs on ESPN+. Williams retired after the 2022 U.S. Open and has since devoted her time to such pursuits as a makeup line that debuted in April and a venture capital firm that invests in women and founders of color in early-stage companies.
