I got this PM from a friend of mine on a thread that was raging yesterday which I replied to
This was my response to him in PM since the thread has since been deleted, no doubt due to my post that garnered a lot of support from the grass roots on the forum.
Uh.. Yes?
An absolutley vast amount of time and resources I have sunk into making the community a better place to be.
Because at the end of the day when you forget that despite all the time and tears and thankless work you put into the place you're doing it for one reason. To make the community. Despite being in charge of the place you have to take up a position of servititude since nobody will join a forum to be made to feel like a second rate citizen. And by taking up a defensive posture with the moderators on one side and "everyone else" on the other you automatically create tension and a rather nasty atmosphere.
Alas, it is best to not say things when you don't know the full situation, is it? - And guess what? Even if I hadn't I have a human right to throw my two cents in and say what I think.
It does say "discussion" board at the top of this forum. If you didn't want to hear any opinions on your post maybe you should of locked it from the onset.
And this is what I'm talking about. The mods on one side and the members on the other. You're making blanket statements about your entire membership, dude. Without making claims it looks like, and forgive me, that you've lost perspective. If you are so jaded by this forum then why threaten people with its closure if you no longer have respect for any of them? Just do it
Also, telling me to "leech on," what is that?
When I joined this forum it was to talk about MJ. To be part of a community and talk about general crap and you know, "discuss" things.
I had no idea I would be considered a "leech" for joining your forum. And I find it rather staggering that you consider the membership that made the forum (because as I said without the membership what is there?) as leeches.
You're pissed off, I get it. despite your claims to the contary I do know what it's like. I've been bitched at endlessly for the most trivial matters of administrating someone who crossed the line. In that you probably have no idea yurself. But don't broadly and indiscriminately paint over every single member.
Well, I've said my piece. Take it as you will. I've tried to be candid and shoot from the hip as I always do. If you take it as a disrespect I can't change that.

Well, I've shot off my response to a few people so if I magically getbanned at least some will know why.
Deary, deary me....

just incase you missed the closure, deletion and reaction to your post:
Paul said:Intrepid said:Paul said:I just wonder, what if the mods got sick of everyone questioning them all the time, if they became sick that all members seem to want to do is run all over them, and dictate how the site should be run, and time and time and time again express such deep disrespect for what they do, that they couldn't handle it anymore?
If the fact that so few people seem to appreciate MJNO, and so many seem to think this site is somehow owed to them (by whom I have no idea), really got the team, and no one wanted to run it for you anymore?
If I didn't want to shell out £200 each and every month anymore, because I felt that so many of the members here just do not deserve it. If Trish, who now runs the site, decides that our efforts are worth nothing - because as soon as someone gets banned (for pulling some jackass, childish, irresponsible stunt), their friends (who they met via MJNO of course) launch campaigns (via MJNO) protesting the decision, telling the mods they're wrong, and that they should stop...moderating! Making the mods feel like crap, who give up their free time just to keep this site in order.
If MJNO just closes one day, and MJJF, because we feel like suckers. If nobody else wants to be a sucker for the fans anymore, to be pushed around and abused, and have their efforts taken for granted, what would you do? Would these sites then get the appreciation they deserve, for all they've done for you, or...would you tell us we suck, because we've had enough, and are drained in every way? I just wonder.
Mods, you're both amazing, and crazy! LOL. But then again, I'm crazier! Just venting, I'm not going mad!
Rather reactionary, don't you think?
I see your point and what you're trying to do but there are, as if often the case, two sides of a coin.
A site with only moderators would not be a site. You need a community, and the community shapes what an otherwise empty forum will become. And the moderators themselves are also members of that community and normal posters as well as being moderators.
I know exactly what I'm talking about because I administrate and moderate a number of forums and I am all to familar with policy issues and the general everyday running of a site.
And yes, I get bitched at a lot where I'm from as well.
Welcome to the Internet.
When someone has the power to silence/ban/edit you there has to be responsibility with that. Fairness is paramount in all situations. If there is favouritism or censorship going on (outside what the rules dictate) then people should be able to say that they dissagree. It's human nature and that's just a reality that should never be stifled.
At the same time I agree that there is a lot of erroneous complaining, and in some cases, disrespect going on around here. But that goes both ways as well.
Instead of threatening people --because that's how the post comes across-- you should be striving for a happier "community," because the "community" is what makes the place.
And if you want to shut the place down then do that instead. Don't threaten the entire board though. That's just counter-productive.
Que Sera, Sera
LMAO, Intrepid, you're trying to give me advice running a forum? I don't mean to be rude, but get real. Do you run any forums comparable to the size of MJNO? If so, have you run it for five years? If so, how much money, time, dedication and heart have you put into it?
I'm sorry, but your experience in moderating some forums hold no weight here at MJNO. It's nowhere near the same, and you've had nowhere near the same experiences to judge my comments.
I'm sure it's easier to take your tone, though. To make it seem as if the mods here don't have it hard at all, as if we're just whining, and should shut up and continue running the site. Yes, that's easier, easier on all the members that treat the mods like crap, and disrspect a place they say they love.
Things will never change.
Leech on.
final post:
Paul said:It's been 5 years! Just wanted to vent a bit! LOL. And it's me calling me a sucker. It doesn't matter. I wasn't trying to make any particular point, except that some people seem to think this is a faceless web site that is owed to them, and don't see the impact their actions have on the people who work their ass off to keep it alive.
