The Eastern Conference Final will feature the Florida Panthers versus the New York Rangers. The Western Conference Final will feature the Dallas Stars versus the winner of Monday’s Second Round series Game 7 between the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. Canes re-sign coach Rod Brind'Amour off latest playoff run

The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed coach Rod Brind'Amour and his staff to multiyear contracts, keeping one of the best in the NHL behind the bench around for the long term. The team announced the re-signings Sunday for Brind'Amour, assistants Jeff Daniels and Tim Gleason, goaltending coach Paul Schonfelder and video coach Chris Huffine. Brind'Amour was in the final year of a deal reached in 2021, when he was the winner of the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach. His status had become a talking point around the NHL as jobs changed hands, though Brind'Amour -- as well as Waddell -- had expressed confidence that a deal would get done.

Brind'Amour took over in 2018 to lead a franchise that had missed the playoffs for nine straight years. The Hurricanes have gone to the playoffs six times in as many seasons under the captain of Carolina's 2006 Stanley Cup winner. Carolina has also won at least one series in each of the past six postseasons, marking the first time a team has accomplished that since the Detroit Red Wings did it from 1995 to 2000. The Canes also reached the Eastern Conference finals twice in the past six seasons. The Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders in five games in Round 1 then lost to the Rangers in a six-game second-round series after falling in a 3-0 hole.

Panthers set attendance record, thanks to deep Stanley Cup run

The on-ice success story for the Florida Panthers is easy to see: They are one win away from a second consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final. The off-ice success isn't hard to figure out either. With an 18th sellout of the season expected for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals Saturday night, when the Panthers host the New York Rangers, Florida has already lured more fans to its rink this year than in any other in the team's 30-season history. And the team's ticket revenue has climbed 50% from where it was just two years ago, according to data shared with The Associated Press. Florida will play its 50th home game of the season Saturday night, tying last year's team for the second most in club history. If Florida makes the Stanley Cup Final, there is a chance that the Panthers' total home attendance could top 1 million for the first time; it will be somewhere around 940,000 for the season when all the tickets for Game 6 against the Rangers are counted. No NHL team saw a bigger jump in regular-season average home attendance this year than the Panthers, whose numbers in that department went up nearly 12% over last season. Over a two-year span, that number is up 25% -- and corporate partnership revenue is up by more than 120% from where it was in 2022, the team said.

Stars to play AHL MVP Mavrik Bourque vs. Oilers in Game 6

American Hockey League MVP Mavrik Bourque will be in the lineup for the Dallas Stars on Sunday when they visit the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Western Conference final. Coach Pete DeBoer told reporters Sunday morning that Bourque will make his NHL playoff debut in place of fellow forward Ty Dellandrea. The Stars are bidding to stave off elimination, as the Oilers hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. If a Game 7 is necessary, it will be played Tuesday in Dallas. Bourque, 22, made his NHL debut on April 6, recording two shots on goal without a point in 10:56 of ice time in the Stars' 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. He had 77 points (26 goals, 51 assists) in 71 games this season for the Texas Stars. The Stars selected Bourque 30th overall in the 2020 NHL draft.

Florida Panthers win 2nd straight Eastern Conference title

The Prince of Wales Trophy was carried onto the ice when time expired, as an arena filled with Florida Panthers fans roared in delight and dozens of players and staffers rushed over to pose with the prize. Last year, the Panthers touched the trophy. This year, they didn't. The message was clear. The Stanley Cup is the only one they want. For the second straight year, they have a chance at hockey's greatest prize. The Panthers -- who lost the Cup finals to Vegas last year -- won the East title series in six games. Florida will face either Edmonton or Dallas for the Cup, that series is set to start on June 8. Florida will play for the Stanley Cup for the third time. The Panthers were swept by Colorado in 1996 and lost 4-1 to Vegas last season. It's also the third time in the finals for Panthers coach Paul Maurice, who lost with Carolina in 2002 and then with Florida last year.

Edmonton controlled much of the game 5 on 5, extended its streak of penalties killed to 30, and its power play did just about everything right except score. Despite all that, the Oilers find themselves trailing in this core group led by McDavid and Leon Draisaitl’s first appearance in the final.

Florida

Bobrovsky put on a masterclass against McDavid and every other player who dared test him and his teammates pounced when given the chance. As a result, the Florida Panthers are off and rolling in the Stanely Cup Final. Bobrovsky, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner for his stellar regular-season play registered his second shutout of this run and third in the playoffs over his 14-year career. Thanks to him, the Panthers have a lead in the cup final for the first time in franchise history and are now three wins away from hoisting hockey’s hallowed trophy for the first time.

Mattias Ekholm scored and Stuart Skinner stopped 25 shots for the Oilers, who now have to buck some serious history. Edmonton has only successfully rallied from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series once — against San Jose in Round 2 of the 2006 playoffs. And teams that start the Stanley Cup Final down 2-0 have come back to win only five times in 54 previous situations.

Evan Rodrigues had a pair of third-period goals, Niko Mikkola and Aaron Ekblad also scored and the Panthers used yet another airtight finishing kick to pull away and beat the Oilers 4-1 for a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Sergel Bobrovsky stopped 18 shots for Florida, which was 1-8 all-time in Cup final games before this series started — and now is two wins away from capturing its first championship. Score through two games: Florida 7, Edmonton 1.

Captain Alexander Barkov set up a goal and scored another, Sergel Bobrovsky made some of the biggest of his 32 saves to thwart a comeback bid and the Panthers held on to beat the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of the Cup final Thursday night. They can win the first title in franchise history as soon as Game 4 on Saturday night in Edmonton.

The Oilers will need to complete a 3-0 comeback done just four times in NHL playoff history — and once in the final all the way back in 1942 — to end Canada’s Cup drought. The last year a team based in Canada won it was Montreal in 1993, months before the Panthers’ inaugural season. Until this series, they had gone 1-8 in the final.

Oilers rout the Panthers 8-1 in Game 4 to avoid being swept in the Stanley Cup Final

The Panthers, hours after family members arrived for a potential celebration more than 2,500 miles from home, took their frustrations out in a handful of post-whistle scrums. One of them gave the Oilers power play more target practice, and the unit that came into the final looking nearly automatic and started 0 for 12 made them pay with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring on the 5-on-3 advantage. McDavid with three assists now has 32 on this run, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record from 1988 for the most in a single postseason.

Edmonton

McDavid scored his first goal of the series as part of a four-point performance, Stuart Skinner was spectacular in making 32 saves. It started with Mattias Jammark scoring 3:11 in on a 2-on-1 rush with Connor Brown. Janmark staked Edmonton to a two-goal lead less than five minutes later, setting up Adam Henrique for his second career goal in the Cup final 12 years after the game-winner for New Jersey that also prevented a sweep in the final.
