I want to smell dark matter
"Look, are we nearly there yet? This is getting absurd," said the young guard.
"This is the last elevator," said the older one, smiling grimly.
"Is that...rock? We're travelling through rock?"
"You'll understand soon. Maybe I shouldn't do this to you..."
"Wait, do what to me!?" The thought came to the younger guard that his mentor was going to murder him and leaving him deep under the ground.
"Show you what I'm about to show you," said the older guard. "Maybe you're not ready to see it."
"Whatever it is, it better by worth the trip. When you said we were going underground, I thought you meant the secret second basement. Everyone knows about it, so it's not really a secret. But after that we got in another elevator...then this one!"
"It's stopped. Come on."
"Finally..."
They got out...then the older guard opened a door revealing a staircase.
"Seriously?" asked the young.
"Seriously," said the older. They head down it. They didn't talk this time. Finally they got to a large metal door. The older guard took a key out. "I'm here," he said on his walke talkie."
"Roger," came a reply. "Opening the remote lock."
"Wait, this door needs to be opened from upstairs and downstairs at the same time? That's...kind of ominous..."
The older guard did not reply. He opened the door and they went inside.
There was a man chained to a chair with a leather bag over his head inside. And nothing else.
"What the hell? How can there be a guy in here?" asked the younger guard, after taking the scene in. "Locked in here...he's a prisoner?"
"Well this is a prison," said the older. "A prison for the most dangerous men in the world."
"But this level of security...who is he?"
The older guard pulled the leather bag off his head and jump back quickly. The man was still gagged underneath. He had a crazed look in his eyes. The younger guard has seen some crazed looks in his time working at the prison, but nothing like this. He felt chilled. Then he recognised the man.
"But he can't be!" he said.
"You've seen his picture then," said the older.
"He's the killer...the one they couldn't explain...he...killed dozens."
"One hundred exactly," said the older.
"But it was fifty years ago! He looks old enough, but wasn't he killed at the time? He's been here all along?"
"We put out the story that he was killed. We head too."
"There were reports...that he was shot again and again but kept coming. He killed several officers...eventually they had to pile on him, hold him down...but they kept shooting and he woudln't die...of course, I thought it was all an urban legend."
"It wasn't. I was there. Fifty years ago."
"You must have been younger than me then!"
"I was nineteen. I saw what he did. I saw what he was doing. I shot him in the head and he didn't die."
"You're...you're lying. How is it possible?"
The older guard removed the gag.
"HOW LONG DO I HAVE?" said the prisoner, right away.
"Hello Ronald," said the older, smiling. He look satisfied. He looked almost as crazed as the prisoner.
"How long?" repeated Ronald.
"I'd say about two minutes," said the guard, looking at his watch. Then Ronald laughed.
"It was still worth it," he said.
"I've come to watch you die," said the older
"You're going to kill him?" asked the younger.
"He can't!" laughed the older. "But time is up."
"But...I don't get it!" said the younger.
"I made a deal with the Devil," said Ronald and there was no sarcasm in his tone. He sounded like he was telling the truth.
"And it's about to run out," said the older.
"It was worth it!" said Ronald. He looked at the younger with those crazed eyes. "Fifty years guaranteed, the devil gave me. I would die fifty years to the day of the deal, but until then, I could not die and I could not be killed. I was invincible. So I went on a killing spree. Well, it was rape first. I was stupid with the rape. That brought the police to my attention. But I thought I was a God. And there was this girl, just sixteen, who I really wanted to rape. So I did. I wasn't even subtle about it. If I had been more careful I could have raped many more. But still, she tasted sweet. Then the pigs came. Then I killed the girl, her family and anyone else I could find. They kept shooting and shooting and they couldn't stop me. I WAS A GOD."
"You were a moron," said the older guard. "Fifty years of life guaranteed and you wasted them in here."
"But I can play them back in my mind. And I have been. The rape, the murders, I play them every day."
"In thirty seconds you won't be able to..."
"But how will he die?" asked the younger.
"Who knows?" said the older. "Maybe he'll just turn to dust. All I know is I want to be here to..."
He was interrupted by his walkie talkie.
"OH GOD," came the voice. "IT'S...IT'S A METEOR. HEADING RIGHT FOR US. OH MY FUCKING GOD IT'S GOING TO HIT...TWENTY SECONDS, THEY JUST SAID SO ON THE NEWS..THERE'S NO WAY..."
"Twenty seconds," smiled Ronald. "Sounds about right."
The older stared in disbelief. "The meteor was destined to hit here all along..." he said.
"And you'll die with me!" lauched Ronald. The heard a rumbling.
"OUT!" screamed the older. He grabbed the younger and pulled him through the door. He slammed it shut. Ronald's laughter could be hear...as the whole room with him in it collapsed. The two guards dived under the staircase.
"Everything was reinforced," said the older, eventually. "Long ago. It was meant to be a nuclear bunker. But his room was new, carved into the rock. I guess it wasn't as stable."
"The prison," said the younger. "Everyone up there, dead. All the guards...all the prisoners..."
"And he knew it," said Ronald. Anger took him. "HE FUCKING KNEW IT. With his last breath he knew that he'd been able to kill again, despite being tied up for fifty years."
The younger could not believe any of it. He also wondered how they were going to get out, because even if the three elevators somehow still worked, there would be a great big meteor on top of them.
It was then that the Devil appeared to him.
"Let's make a deal," said Satan.
"This is the last elevator," said the older one, smiling grimly.
