I want to smell dark matter
He walked, but didn't know that he walked. He was totally on autopilot. He was not thinking at all. When he didn't think, he didn't exist. His reality crumbled around him. Nothing was real. There was nothing. He could have blinked out of existence and not even noticed. But he was still there. He was nearly home, he knew that faintly. But he still wasn't thinking, even as he opened the door and went inside.
It was not his house. It wasn, but it wasn't. Things were different, yet the same. He felt embarrased and confused. Had he fogotten what his house looked like? He couldn't be in the wrong house, it was not possible. He looked outside just in case. It was definitely his house. But...even the street looked different. But it wasn't like there was another street, identical to his in most ways but subtly different, that he could have walked into. That was crazy talk. Yet it seemed the only explanation.
He stepped outside againd and looked around. He could see the hills and they were exactly the same as they always looked from his front door. It HAD to be his house. The door was even the same. He shut his eyes and squeezed them tight. He had been feeling weird lately. Feeling like he was about to disappear. There was something wrong with him, not the house. He'd open his eyes and everything would be fine.
He steppe through the front door and opened his eyes. Everything was not fine. The house was still wrong. He touched his own body to make sure he was there. He felt like crying.
Then a woman and a man about his age appeared.
"Mum, who is that? What's he doing?"
"I don't know...hello, do you want something?"
He couldn't remember how to speak.
"I'll get the gun..."
Gun?
"No, don't, he just seems confused..."
"Mum, it's not safe! They killed the prime minister, nobody's safe!"
He felt sick. He was in a parallel universe, he knew that suddenly. He'd seen enough science fiction to know that. He'd forgotton where he was and stepped outside of his reality. He had ended up somewhere new. He had to remember, even as the woman stepp towards him, a sympathetic look on her face. He had to remember...
Suddenly, the woman was his mother and he was home.
"Didn't hear you come in," she said.
"I just slipped in," he said.
