Doctor Who 'to be made into film'

Dr Who is to be taken to the big screen by Harry Potter director David Yates.

Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, told Variety that he is about to start work on developing a "Doctor Who" film with the BBC.

He told the showbiz magazine that the film would take a fresh approach to the cult sci-fi show.

"We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena," he said.

"Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.

Yates is reported to be working with the head of LA-based BBC Worldwide Productions, Jane Tranter.

Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.

After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. David Tennant took over in the same year.

The sixth series of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, broadcast on BBC earlier this year.

The whole "two to three years to get it right" thing makes me think it'll be forgotten about and never made.

All I said at SFX was that "it was the worst idea since Mr and Mrs Hitler decided to have kids", and I got accused of blowing it out of proportion.

I mean seriously?

Me?

THing is, that sounds like the kind of line that you've got in trouble for previously. ;)

It IS a terrible idea, though. It just shows complete disrespect and ignorance of the show's history and its fanbase, and smacks of someone who thinks that because they have the power to do something, they're somehow obligated to take a shot at it.

They keep saying how we should be impressed because he directed four of the most popular films of all time, but basically he inherited a massivly sucsessful franchise that kids would go to by the millions even if the director was a squirrel trapped in a cookoo clock.

The stories were in place, the actors where in place, all he had to do was roll the cameras and not set fire to the film and he had a series of blockbusters handed to him on a plate.

Not being a Potter fan I had never heard of the guy, even saying that I would have given him the benefit of the doubt if he had just said "the film would fit somewhere in the past of the existing continuity" even better if he has said it would be Tennent playing the Doctor.

But to say we are just starting again, you might end up where we did last time there was a film, where the doctor wasnt even a time lord, and the tardis was just some time and space machine a nutty english guy invented in his back yard, that looked like a police box for no good reason.

And the best Potter movie is still the third one, directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

(I haven't seen the latest two, I'm just assuming!)

As an American who has become a rabid fan of this entire series within the last few years, fuck that asshole. What a giant dick. Yes, the last (made-for-tv) movie they did sucked bad. I also completely agree that this jaggoff had the blockbusters handed to him. Potter is a wildly successful literary franchise, spanning dozens of languages across the world. This was YEARS before the films, even. How could you NOT make a billion dollars!?

Maybe they'll just to a porno gangbang of Amy getting railed by all the Doctors simultaneously. Explain THAT timey wimey stuff!
