They seem to ignore the fact that much of the original series success(and the relative lack thereof in the prequels) was thanks to the ground breaking special effects, which hadn't been seen in any other movies of the time. I don't actually think there is anything particularly unique about Star Wars beyond that. I certainly don't think the series would have been such a hit if the effects had been awful.

Well, the site is focused on the story-telling influences, not the effects. I'm sure they wouldn't deny the special effects were awesome and helped make the film so great. I'm sure if you called up the site owner he wouldn't say "NO, THE EFFECTS SUCKED LOL!"
And if the story had been crap and random and the characters not so likable and hairy then the "word of mouth" woudln't have been as good, no matter how great the effects were.
