the absinthe drinker

curiousa2z

Be patient till the last.
ok, I'm trying to convey by the oozy green background that the absinthe drinker is slowy being enveloped in the haze of his addiction.
I put in a bright yellow background to show his potential before the absinthe started clouding over his life.
Is there enough yellow showing on the left side or should I put more in to contrast with the darkness behind him on the right? Thoughts, please.

The only thing I'd say is more deeper skin tones on the hand. Perhaps bring in the thumb, by blocking in with the colours of the jacket. More shading to the inside of the hand, and perhaps the right hand side of the face, that is away from the light source.

The background colours of fine.

Having said that, it's better than anything I ever did before stopping sketching, painting & sculpting after my A-Levels, ooh, 13 years ago.

I think its fine as it is, although if thats not someone elses hand with the glass, then theres something weird going on with his arm.

He looks a bit like John Deacon, the bass player from Queen. Especially around the mouth.

I was trying to comment earlier but the server was too busy. I like the face a lot, the background colors are great. The hand is a bit off, it looks like someone else is holding the glass cause the thumb is on the wrong side of the glass. Hands are hard, not that I ever was an artist or anything, but I used to spend hours trying to draw my own hand.

I'm pretty certain it is somebody else holding the glass out to him.

I kind of like the ambiguity of who is holding the glass, it could be him, or someone else.

Someone else = addiction

or mayhbe rape

i like that drawing you did

I think its bloody amazing.

It looks like someone else's hand holding the glass. Was that on purpose to show how detached he is from his physical self or something?

Yeah, I see that too, as if he's being forced to continue on with his addiction.

Or am I just waaaaaaaaaay stoned? Either way, it's a cool painting. Wish I could draw. My mom's an artist and her two daughters couldn't draw a stick figure.

'Rape is holding the glass' is an underrated theory IMO

thanks for all your kind & helpful thoughts! A round of Green Absinthe for my friends!

here's the truth:
98% of my paintings take on a life of their own and end up in directions I hadn't planned. I don't know how this happens, but it does.

... started out with the idea that he was holding the glass, and struggled trying to get the goddamned fsagetrxzutfk thumb to come out right.

Then I realised that it looks like someone else giving him the absinthe - which takes on a whole new set of implications -much more louche, IMHO - so I'm leaving it with either possibility - my awkward rendition of him holding the damn glass himself, OR is someone else enabling his addiction?

When I look at his slouched shoulders and the sallow skin, dark circles under the red-rimmed eyes , he really does seem detached about his fate, doesn't he? Why not just drink from the glass someone's holding out to him. Is it another addict sharing a drink? Is it someone cruel who wants to see how far he'll go? Is it someone who pities him, the way a nurse gives methadone to a heroin addict?

OTOH, ignoring the bad draftsmanship of the hand, his raised eyebrows, slightly sardonic smirk and direct look at the viewer suggests the "what?" challenge - that he's so into the thrall of the Green Fairy he doesn't care who knows it.

You, the viewer, decide.

!

Maybe it's the hand of GOD.

There's just enough yellow IMO. It looks like it would if you were looking through a drinking glass.

i drank a lot of Absinthe back in the 90s, i mean a lot, for a time getting the stuff smuggled in, selling it to others took up a bunch of my free time
i even helped some people i knew make some of their own here
but it was always the real good stuff from the Czech Republic that impressed the right people in the Goth scene, then in 01 my dad died and i drank all of my stock between the time it took to drive to the hospital to the funeral a week later
then i stopped drinking, cuz well, the old man was an AA guy, so i thought i'd quit for his sake, the wife was very happy of course too
6 months later i was in Europe when an old friend of mine gave me 4 bottles to take back with me to the states
so for old times sake we drank, I drank so much I passed out, while I was passed out, my wife cheated on me with him
years later he admitted to me that the Absinthe had been ploy he used to increase his chances with her
then we took 2 bottle back with us 2 New York
I was drinking from one of them in our room at the Chelsea Hotel when i got the call from my mom that my brothers had been hit by a drunk driver
one died, the one who did not drink, the other was too drunk to drive
so yeah, Absinthe is some spooky shit
or those were just a bunch of weird coincidences...

A cautionary tale.

I too used to drink it a lot. Other than a bad first experience, after drinking close to half a pint neat, all was OK until I stopped drinking it. I haven't drunk any for close to 3 years now.

it's just too expensive up here.
hard to justify $84.95 for 700ml, IMHO.
