The Avengers to be directed by... Joss Whedon

Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk will soon start taking orders from Joss Whedon.
Marvel Studios is wrapping up a deal for Whedon to helm "The Avengers," which assembles the superheroes in one pic on May 4, 2012, that Paramount will distrib. Whedon will also rework Zak Penn's script.

Whedon, a favorite among fanboys, most recently penned the script for "Cabin in the Woods," a horror pic that he is also producing for MGM. Pic co-stars Chris Hemsworth, who plays the hammer-wielding Thor.

The creator of series like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and more recently "Dollhouse," all for Fox, has been close to helming a superhero pic before, namely "Wonder Woman" for Joel Silver at Warner Bros., but Whedon wound up ankling the project due to creative issues.

He directed episodes of those series, and recently helmed an episode of Fox's "Glee." "Serenity" is his sole film directing credit. The sci-fi western, distribbed by Universal in 2005, was based on the short-lived "Firefly."

"The Avengers" extends Whedon's long relationship with Marvel. He wrote for the comicbook company's "Astonishing X-Men" series.

"The Avengers" would star Robert Downey Jr. (as Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Hemsworth (Thor) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). Edward Norton may also return as the Hulk.

Yup.

So.

Cool, huh?

If any man can finally create the ultimate achievement of making a film with both Natalie Portman and Michelle Trachtenberg (and ScarJo), Joss Whedon can.

Whisky has a point. Joe Q. Lunchbox is an idiot and didn't recognise the brilliance of Serenity. Studio forked him with Aliens Rez. Wonder Woman didn't even get off the ground.

I love Joss to bits but he and the silver screen aren't exactly BBFs.

Well this time, he doesn't have to make a single effort to get butts in the seats, because everybody loves Sam Jackson and Iron Man. He can just write the creepy Kitty Pryde fetish movie he's (and I, honestly) always dreamt of, and people won't realise it until it's too late!

Except X men are still owned by another studio dick brain.

I really hope Marvel hasn't actually signed away the exclusive movie rights for X-Men characters to FOX, because some of my favourite Avengers are mutants. I demand creepy quasi-incestuous mutant twins in my Joss movie.

Believe it or not, I would love a world where any marvel character was free to appear in any other marvel film, I used to love that aspect of the comics, but for now its just not happening, not while studios will rush out any old shite, just to prevent them from losing the franchise.

Here's how I would do the film...

1) Starts with The Hulk on a destructive rampage in some big city and he's fucking shit up and the president picks up the phone and says "GET ME NICK FURY."
2) Fury knows now is the time to put The Avengers for the first time and we get an awesome montage of him contacting Tony Stark, Captain America and Thor as they're all doing various things of their own all over the world.
3) The Avengers ASSEMBLE and take down The Hulk in spectacular fashion.
4) The Hulk is taken back to a SHIELD base and scientist Jane Foster (NATALIE PORTMAN) works out how to turn him back into Bruce Banner (YES ED NORTON HAS SIGNED ON.) Banner explains that he was actually INVESTIGATING an evil plot by the Skrulls/Loki/The Red Skull/MODOK/BASTARD MAN (or perhaps all of them!) and that they used some mind mojo to make him flip out and turn into the Hulk as a DISTRACTION.
5) Faced with THE END OF THE WORLD Fury expands the Avengers by bringing in Black Widow, Ant Man, The Wasp (PLAYED BY MICHELLE TRACHTENBERG) and even some mutants if possible (Rogue has her powers back and X3 isn't mentioned.) Not Spider-Man though!
6) Big massive battle scene against whoever the bad guys are with the Hulk being deployed at a crucial moment to help the good guys win.
7) Wash dies!
8) Everyone laughs and winks at the camera.
9) BUT THE BAD GUY'S STILL ALIVE, SEQUEL!?

MODOK had better be in one of these damn films!!

S.H.I.E.L.D's.

I don't really like how they have seen from the previous movies for everyone with a previous movie EXCEPT the Hulk. Yeah I know Ed Norton isn't in this movie and blah blah but I hope they're not going to act like The Incredible Hulk never happened.

I dunno, I think this movie may be Marvel's undoing. In terms of total money, they have dwarfed DC in the superhero movie market, but I think this is their overreaching bid to unseat Dark Knight, simply because they don't like not being #1.

I just feel like this is biting off more than they can chew, and by the time the movie is released, either half the superstar cast will be replaced, or the story will be a complete muddle from trying to appease everyone's agent's bitching about equal screen time, number of lines, billing, etc. Hollywood doesn't come together like this anymore, the lawyers won't allow it.

I think if this was the only film to have the big stars in, you'd be right, but as most of the giant stars in the film have also been promised more solo films (Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, a Nick Fury film, etc) they'd be more willing to share the screen for just this one film.
