Drinking too much and watching "react" videos on YouTube.
Addams Family: The plot isn't much but the execution is excellent. Casting, costumes, scenes that advance the plot. So much better than anything I've watched in awhile in the 21st century.
With that outlier out of the way, lets get into the theme I've stumbled upon:
Mars Attacks: If you asked me for a top 3 Burton pics list, you'd have Beetlejuice, Batman, maybe PeeWee's Big Adventure or Edward Scissorhands. I probably wouldn't come up with Mars Attacks, but it is freaking awesome. It may be Burton's best work.
Independence Day: You got Men In Black for other Will Smith evil alien shenanigans. Titanic was also big at the time. And a lot of it doesn't hold up that well. The FX are pretty rickety by modern standards, but Independence Day is a pretty entertaining '90s movie with eevil aliens. "WE COME IN PEACE. ARP ARP!" [vaporizes a few people]
And then there's the Stargate. Stargate is interesting because I was a big Stargate: SG-1 nerd. And it is a completely different production team. In fact, as I understand it, Independence Day, by the people who did Stargate, was supposed to be in the Stargate universe. But MGM launching a TV show put the kibosh on that. Anyhow, it's interesting to rewatch Stargate (or at least a react video on Stargate) and see how faithfully they (initially) adapted the TV show to the movie. It eventually found its own voice, but the early episodes stayed close to the movie.
