I have a satellite for my TV.. I don't understand why it's so much cheaper for the TV than for the internet.

How much is satellite internet access going for these days, anyway? And what are the transfer speeds supposed to be.

Note: I'm too lazy to look this shit up.

Well, I haven't checked for a few months, but last time I checked it was about $600 for the satellite and maybe $80 a month for the service.. maybe it was $69 can't remember. HughesNet bought DirecWay so maybe it's cheaper now. I think the upload speeds were kinda slow, but ANYTHING is faster than dial up.

oo.. they have a special.. upload 128 kpbs download up to 700 kpbs

ok after rebate the satellite and equipment is $299.98 and the service plan is from $59.99 - $79.99 depending on the speed you choose. Not as bad as it was a few months ago, but I still don't want to spend that much every month. :rwmad:
 
Youch, that's just silly. I knew the set up costs for the dish were pretty extreme to begin with, but had no idea the actual service was still that much.

Are you in the sticks or something? Far out of town? Because there are starting to be at least some wireless service providers in rural areas...
 
The guy who put my second phone line in last year said the DSL people were skipping where I live to install it north of here. I might have DSL within the next 5 yrs, after they put in a new subdivision. I'll probably never have cable. They have DSL about a mile south of here, the bastards! oh and yes I live in the sticks.
 
Lots of countries are competing to get 100% broadband for everybody, maybe the US will join in.

There SHOULD be a lot more coverage than there is, but it seems like they're focusing on urban areas first, which makes sense. Still, if there's DSL access a mile south of you I don't see why they couldn't expand their coverage just a bit. My sister has the same problem.

You know why?

Because we all remember the quality of Wacky's posts skyrocketing when he got broadband, teaching us all a valuable lesson: It's not the quality of the words in the posts, it's the speed at which those packets arrived at the server.
