The trouble with Elton (and funny, I got into this debate with some people at the piano bar last night) is that he has never written a song by himself. He's never written a lyric in his life, which to me would disqualify him. But that's just my subjective litmus test.

Oh, I always thought he co-wrote them. Does he just write the melodies and let the other guy do the words, then?

Yup. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to all of his classic hits. He teams with other lyricists for his movie and Broadway scores.

I just saw Elton on Elvis Costello's talk show, and he said flat out that he just can't do it, he's tried to write lyrics in the past and it just didn't happen. But he loves putting other people's words to music.
