The MF'n Garden thread

OK, I KNOW most of you don't care about gardens unless they are LADY GARDENS. This is a thread for me to ask CURIOUSA2Z about gardening, OR anyone else who is growing stuff and might have TIPS AND TRICKS or just wants to talk about their plants.

I am trying to grow vegetables without using UNNATURAL pesticides. I ain't no hippie treehugger but I don't like the idea of eating chemicals, or killing off the good bugs with the bad. I need the bees and ladybugs!

Curiousa2z, have you ever tried garlic and oil spray to get rid of aphids? I've got these little ants farming aphids on my eggplants. I finally mixed up some smashed garlic and onion with some cooking oil and water and sprayed a few leaves to see if it works. I'm thinking of planting a clove of garlic in the container (my garden is a container garden, BIG containers). Garlic is supposed to drive the ants away according to the internet.

I've just trimmed off my fourth lot of Asparagus - I've managed to grow some cauliflower after trying for four years. Some carrots have also come up, and the spuds aren't far off either. I ate the parsnips last week. WUT.

You are very patient Gagh. I am out in my garden fussing at the tomatoes to hurry up and get ripe ALL THE TIME. I don't know if I could stand waiting three years.

Cassie, I've never hear of garlic used against ants, let me know if it helps! (Although I am not sure if I want my roses to smell like garlic'n'onions..)
As for the aphids, I use dish liquid or curd soap solved in water and spray the leaves with it when there's an infestation. The aphids are usually gone within 1 or 2 days.

I was wrong about the ants, ants don't care about garlic but apparently aphids don't like it. I will let you know if the aphids move out!

I was spraying with water and dish liquid but I slacked off on that and the aphids moved in. If the garlic doesn't work I'll hit them with some soap and water.

yup, what Ily said: I use soap and water for the ^%$#@ aphids if there arent any ladybugs around.

Ants dont like tansy, which has a ferny leaf and small yellow flowers. I planted some by the kitchen door and they seem to stay away, inspite of the fact that I'm the world's worst housekeeper and sweep only if/when the floor becomes a Health Department issue....
good luck Cassie! Mother Earth appreciates what yer trying to do!

no.
but how big is the yard? this is gross, but if you can spare some, human hair will repel alot of critters..(are you pals with a hairdresser?) .....try spreading cuttings/ hair from your hairbrush around the parameters and see if that helps.

What about herb gardens? Can I use those potted kinds, or do I actually have to put them in the ground?

(see how much I know about gardening? But I'm re-dedictating myself and would like to have my own little herb garden since getting to an herb shop out in the country is impossible.)

Yes. I heard that too. Thanks.

Any of you grow gardenias? I'm having trouble with mine, the leaves are turning yellow and falling off.

I don't grow them, but I know that for gardenias, both water and soil should be deficient in lime. They also have to be watered regularly, they respond very badly to drought.

OH, that's bad. Florida has lots of lime in the soil, even our road is covered with lime rock. Maybe it washes down into the yard.
