You may or may not have heard, but there are two new Mac coming to the market today, with more to come in the following months.
The iMac G5 and Powerbook G4 now have sister units, the iMac Duo Core and the MacBook Pro, both of which use Intel's new Duo Core processor, a low watt, high performance dual core single bus chip, bolstered with a 2MB L2 cache. Fuckin' hawt (for nerds).
I think it's awesome, the MacBook Pro is reportedly 5x as fast as the Powerbook G4, which was pretty fast to begin with. Now with processor intensive tasks getting chewn up and spit out, I'm drooling more than I normally drool over those sexy 15 inchers.
Five times as fast - a dual core processor in a notebook. Speeds comparable to those of a 1.8 Dual G5 PowerMac, only in a notebook. Gawd damn. Throw in a built in video conferencing camera, a remote, and a new power adapter, that shit, god damn, man. Me wanty.
The announcement (caution, 1 hour, 33 minutes)
Given that the Mac has now received a major, major speed boost, the OS is very hard to infect with malicious software, the ease of use and productivity is high while hassle and configuration is low, I would wager that the Mac is going to look much better to those who've never considered one.
Let me cut off any protests regarding the customizabilty of PCs, the better prices of PCs (or at least more bang for your buck), and the market share/application support of PC by saying, I know. I know. Mac are somewhat of a luxery item, but I feel you get what you pay for with a secure, elegant, powerful design that just works 24/7. Easy enough for grandma, powerful enough for Unix, Linux, and general computer nerd type folk. I know they are expensive, but like I said, you get what you pay for.
Could it be possible that Bill Gate's stranglehold on the OS market might crumble? Are Norweigian hackers going to distro the x86 version of Mac OS X for PCs? Will the subsequent install of a virus free, easy to use, and powerful operating system wake people up to the fact that they've had the curtains drawn across their Windows (awful pun, I know)? Only time will tell, but what an exciting time it will be, eh?
Speaking of time telling some shit, there will be more announcements over the next six months, with revisions to include Intel processors into every Macintosh made. Can you imagine a Mac Mini that is five times faster sold for the same price? How about a PowerMac with two dual core Intel processors running at 3.0GHz each (12.0GHz total processing power)? What about a new iBook, probably named MacBook, running twice as fast with a nine hour battery life?
Can you hear me? Can you feel me near you?
