Network orders up pair of unscripted series

For anyone who's ever boasted that their dad is better than anyone else's dad, NBC has a show for you.

And if your dad happens to be a mentalist, the network has a show for you as well.

NBC has picked up a pair of unscripted shows for later this season. The first, "Phenomenon," will search for "the next great mentalist." Set to debut Wednesday, Oct. 24, the show will take 10 contestants who claim to have abilities beyond those of normal humans. Famed spoon-bender Uri Geller and magician Criss Angel will host and judge the proceedings.

Then at midseason, the network will unveil "My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad," an eight-episode show from Mark Burnett ("Survivor," "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?") that pits fathers and their families in competition to see whose dad really is the best. Contestants will be playing for cash to finance their kids' education and other prizes.

"I love this concept because it combines the family fun and kid empowerment of 'Fifth Grader' with the universally relatable concept of bragging that your dad is the best," Burnett says.

As for "Phenomenon," it's based on an Israeli show, also fronted by Geller, that garnered huge ratings there. The show will take place before a live audience, the better to assure the home audience that it's watching things unfold in real time. The winner gets a $250,000 prize.
