How Brittney Griner's absence affects Team USA at 2022 FIBA World Cup

The 2022 FIBA World Cup will be the first major competition that the U.S. women's basketball team will compete in without Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner since the 2012 Summer Olympics. The World Cup, which starts Wednesday in Sydney, will be a poignant marker for the women's basketball world that one of its most recognizable stars of the past decade is facing an uncertain future in a Russian prison. Griner, the No. 1 WNBA draft pick in 2013, has been an enthusiastic participant in USA Basketball senior national team events since she made the squad for the 2014 World Cup, which she played in just a couple of weeks after winning the WNBA title with the Mercury. In the Tokyo Olympics last year, Griner averaged 16.5 points, tied for the U.S. lead with Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson, and 7.2 rebounds.

FIBA World Cup 2022: Kahleah Copper helps carry USA Basketball into quarterfinals

Whether in the WNBA or on the international stage, Copper makes plays no one else on the court can replicate, maybe not even her own teammates on a roster loaded with WNBA All-Stars. "Kah is just electric," Stewart said. "It seems like she just slithers to the basket. She's able to find these gaps where she gets in and is able to get an easy layup. But she's a spark. Whenever her name is called, she's ready." Copper averaged 11.0 points on 53.8% shooting (41.7% on 3-pointers), 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals in 20.0 minutes as the United States finished group play undefeated, winning its five games by an average margin of 46.2 points. The next step is beating Serbia, the No. 10 team in FIBA's rankings, in the
quarterfinals Wednesday (10 p.m. ET, ESPNU/ESPN+). With a win, the top-ranked American would face the Canada-Puerto Rico winner in the semifinals.

Team USA withstands challenge from Serbia to advance to FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup semifinals

It had been a minute since Team USA looked a step behind on the court, but that was the case Thursday in its FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup quarterfinal game. Team USA trailed for the first time all tournament 4-0 and shortly afterward at 11-7 against a fearless Serbia team that managed to make it a four-point game late in the second quarter in front of a loud, mostly pro-Serbia crowd. But the Americans did what they typically do: Put their foot on the gas and not let up, going on a 20-0 run following an injury to wing Kahleah Cooper to put the game away, ultimately advancing to the semifinal behind an 88-55 win.

New-look Team USA wins fourth straight gold at FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup

A fair amount of uncertainty surrounded USA Basketball as they entered a new chapter of the post-Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi era. But in front of a crowd of 15,895 fans at the Sydney SuperDome -- most of whom were enthusiastically supporting Team China -- the new-look Team USA successfully reinforced the legacy that was built by those who came before them by winning a fourth consecutive World Cup gold and 11th overall behind a 83-61 victory over China in the final.
