Today's thing of the day is a band - The Flying Pickets were a band that had some exposure during the early 80's, mostly at the time of the Coal Miner's strike, when the post-Falklands Thatcher backlash reached it's peak.
The band sound a cappella, and comprised usually around half a dozen members, that rotated fairly frequently.
The band itself promoted a heavy socialist political motif, and their only hit was a Christmas No.1 in '83.
Subsequently, their music has become much maligned, and are now seen as an apitomy of piss-poor 80's Popular Music.
Even hearing a snippet of their only hit 'Only You', originally sung by Yazoo provokes feeling of nostalgia, depression & even a little resentment for me! It's lovely at first, but try to remember the time it came from, then imagine hearing it 1000 times...
