I want to smell dark matter
Freddie was pacing around in a circle, pausing every so often to throw his hands up in the air and mumble something about
"Calm down, mate," said Marcus. "Your shoes aren't on fire. For fuck's sake!"
"Marcus, his mind is truly fucked up!" said Sophie.
"Oh, now you're swearing, after all those times you told me off!" said Marcus. Sophie often complained about his foul mouth.
"This is serious," she said. "He's been frozen longer than anyone...and he was the first, he got such a high dosage...I think the damage is premanent!"
"It's only been five fuckdamn minutes, you can't tell if it's permanent yet!" said Marcus, watching Freddie gesture wildly with his arms. "Although he does seem like a bit of a spacko. Maybe he was already like that."
"No, we checked his school records, he was a straight A student," said Sophie.
"Social spacko then," said Marcus. "One of them Asperger's bastards. There was lots of them earlier this century, before it got cured."
"No, he left a pregnant girlfriend behind, his son's still alive..."
"Sssh," said Marcus, in a rare moment of tact. "Don't let him know that yet, he'll probably rip your tits off in anger. OWW, Angel, what are you doing sniffing around there?"
Angel was an eccentric Russian who worked for the company. She had not been selected to meet Freddie on his defrosting. It was thought she would scare him. She was now holding his shoes up to her mouth.
"Yes, yes, nothing, I do nothing," she said, then licked his shoes.
"EWW, minging!" said Sophie.
"You dirty boohat," said Marcus.
"No, no, is good, yes, I put shoes on eBah, make pretty penny, give ten percent to charity, yes, haha, it good, have a party!" said Angel. Then she just walked away with the shoes.
"She's putting his fucking shoes on eBay!" said Marcus. Then, after a moment's thought he added "I wish I'd thought of that!"
"Marcus, look!" said Sophie. Freddie has finally stopped pacing. He was looking at them now.
"Forty two years?" he asked.
"Yeah," said Marcus. "Your parents are dead, before you figure it out for yourself."
"Marcus!" said Sophie, punching his arm.
"The factory...there were rumours they were working on a weapon," said Freddie, almost whispering.
"Nah mate, just suspending animation," said Marcus.
"I...I broke in," said Freddie. "But there wasn an explosion...I thought my shoes were on fire...where are they, anyway?"
"Err, they're being examined," said Sophie. "Look, Freddie, there's a lot of people here who would like to speak to you...you're very important, you know? Freezing is common now, but you were the first person to ever go through it and you've been in suspended animation longer than anyone."
"Why couldn't you wake me up sooner?" Freddie asked.
"Doesn't work like that," said Marcus. "The dosage you initially receive decides how long you'll be asleep for...if we'd tried to bring you out sooner you'd have died."
"Oh," he said. "So...I guess things are quite different now?"
"Pretty much the same...fuddamentally, anyway," said Sophie. "Apart from the aliens, of course."
