I want to smell dark matter
So my friend said I should meet this guy. Was he trying to set me up, I asked. No, he said, of course not. Just that his friend was interesting and since I wans't doing anything I should spend the afternoon with him. I still didn't want to do it. But he was right, I wasn't doing anything else. And I was somewhat intriuged after my friend said this guy had invented something. Something amazing. He said I'd be awestruck. So I met him. And this is what happened.

"So you're an inventor?" I asked.
"That's right!" he said.
"What have you invented?"
"I'll tell you in a minute, but first I would like to explain something to you. You know how everyone dreams, right?"
"Yes...I know how everyone dreams..."
"Imagine this. Just open your mind to this for a moment, right? Our dreams, okay, they're like...they're like another dimension. Kind of. A dream dimension. It's not...it's not how we think it is. Our dreams aren't individual. They're all....they're all the same thing. All part of the same thing. What I mean is...you go to the dream dimension when you dream. Then you wake up and live your life. But then you go back there the next time you dream and it follows on from your previous dream. Do you get that? This dream dimension is where all your dreams live, one after the other. Flowing, like a river. Dreams aren't gone when they're over, they just turn into the next one. For you, you're awake in between, but in the dream dimension no time at all passes between them. All your dreams are there one after another. All part of the same thing. Anothe dimenions, another you. Another reality we enter when we dream. And our mind shapes that reality, that's why in your dreams you see things you know from the waking world. And all our dreams are next to each other, right...what if you could go back? What if you could turn the flow round and go back to a previous dream? What if there was some machine that let you do that...you could go back into a dream you had when you were a child. You could change it. See, you'd be lucid dreaming, in your old dream. You could alter things now. Plant ideas in there. Then your young self wakes up and it remembers. It's influenced. You could change your past. By travelling through dreams. Imagine that."
"Wow."
"That's something, huh?"
"And you invented this machine!?"
"What? No!"
"But..."
"This is a story I'm writing!"
"But you were going to tell me about your inventions...I was going to be awestruck...I WAS awestruck."
"I invented a talking toaster. PRetty cool, huh?"
"Well not compared to the time travelling dream machine, no!"

I was angry at my friend. Why would I have been awestruck by a talking toaster? I didn't think I'd ever see the inventor again. Then, three weeks later, I ran into him. He asked me to come back to his place. I don't know why I did.

"You know how when we feel something, it's all in our brain?" he said.
"Umm, yes?" I said.
"Think about this, right. Everything we feel is just in our head. It's just the brain created the sensation, right? Reacting to stimulus. So that means...that means that our brain must have a record, right. It must have every possible thing that can ever be felt stored inside it. Every possible sensation is written into our very DNA! How else could we feel anything? When we encountur stimulus our brain just searches for the proper feeling, searches its records, then play the correct response for us. So anything we could ever feel, pain, pleasure, everything in between...it's all locked up in us. What if there was a way to feel these things without the corret stimulus? What if we could just unlock these feelings...say feelings of pleasure, with something else. Some kind of machine, maybe..."
"Look, I don't really think what you're saying is right at all and I know this is just another book..."
"Oh, it's not a book."
"What, you invented this machine? Don't make me laugh?"
"No...it's this."
And then he kissed me.
"What the fuck? You can't just kiss people like that!"
"Did you like it?"
"No, not really!"
"But you could...the way a pleasurabe kiss feels is in your brain, you see. You just have to access it. We could keep kissing until you do. It's an experiment."
"I don't think it is."
"What do you think, then?"
"I think you just want to have sex with me."
"Well there is that too."
"Right. Okay. Let's do it then."
"Really?"
"I'm going to regret this, but sure. Why not."
