I have to disagree. There's a world of difference between his characters in Howard's End and the The Remains of the Day, even though they may look identical in still photos.
And Richard Burton couldn't have played Hannibal Lecter to save his life. Drunks can't pull off that steely-eyed stare; the eyes are too bloodshot.
His problem is that a select few of his performances were so iconic, that the rest of his work doesn't get as much notice, except for the big-budget pics where he did it for the paycheck, like Meet Joe Black. In those pics, they just needed a Brit with a steady voice and were willing to pay.
