If they actually DESTROY VULCAN in this movie that'll be a pretty big divergance from the old canon, eh chaps?

It would really STING.
 
Maybe, if you're one of those canon zealot DRONES.

They're only destroying a bit of Vulcan, it's a bit like that Xindi weapon where it cut a small line across the planet, which important characters happened to be in the way of.

Yes the weapon that warned Earth about the Xindi being after them, allowing Earth to stop the Xindi before they could finish their Death Star. Great plan!
 
Yeah, they could've just tested it on some planet that was like Earth, but didn't have a fleet of ships and sensors surrounding it. And they also could've made it so the weapon actually blew up, rather than falling down to Earth so the bits could be tested and plonked in front of knowledgeable Vulcans wearing carpets.
 
It was all Gul Dukats fault anyway, he was the future guy in the tube giving orders
