1066: Duke William of Normandy decisively defeats Anglo-Saxon King Harold II at Hastings on the southern English coast. King William I the Conqueror would go on to seize all of England, replace the Saxon nobles with Normans, and found a dynasty that would rule the island for the next eighty eight years.
