Nick Buchanan studies environmental history as it relates to the history of technology, to people's purposeful and inadvertent reshapings of the landscapes around them, and to their understandings of these changes. He focuses on the history of the environment in highly engineered and altered places. Of particular interest to him are the intersection of industrial agriculture and the environment (especially the history of water and irrigation technologies) and the history of urban planning.
