Top 20 Trek actors of all time (definitive)

Do you need a number of eps set for you? Is there an actor that was only in 2 episodes that you thought was so phenomenal that it was better than most every Trek regular's multi-year output?

I dunno, after 10 years together, I would think we've grown a communal understanding of what we would consider a recurring character. This doesn't have to be about rulings and debates and being clever...just don't add a Flexo. ;)

I'm not looking to set rules or impose beliefs, that's why I'm asking everyone else. I'm just the one starting the thread and I don't want the first 10 posts to be debates about what's in the first post. HAVE FUN.

BTW, if we are hoping to make a top 50 actors list, everyone voting for the same ten people isnt really going to work.

We might need to add a second list of 11 to 20 just to get some new names in there.

Yes, god forbid anyone with an actual oscar for best actor should appear on a best actor list.

I will contribute, but I have to do some serious thinking. Also, I'll have to look up the names of some actors, because I'm terrible at remembering real names.

Twenty seems like a better limit than ten anyway. I don't know how anyone can right a top ten with only ten people on it.

BUT if someone CAN only think of ten they should of course submit that list and it should count just the same.

It seems a shame to miss out one time actors, though. Even with 20 places, just including main and recurring actors is going to throw up the same names over and over. But if we did open it up to all actors we might get a few unexpected gems that we'd forgotten. I don't think including the movies is a big deal, either. In the spirit of voting for actors based on their performance in Trek, rather than how famous they are, not many people will be voting for Malcolm McDowell, because while being a big name, Soran wasn't a great display of his acting. But IMO, Ricardo Montalban does deserve to be in a list of top Trek actors.

Maybe if you ask Eggs nicely he might see if he caaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn open it up to one time guest stars.

Ask Eggs nicely? I tried to say three different ways, this isn't something I wanted to rule or take over, I just got it started. It will be whatever we want it to be. Jesus. HAVE FUN.

I'm against one time guest stars because it completely changes the nature of the vote. If someone's a regular or recurring guest star then I've got a sense of how they were as an actor because they've appeared enough times for it to be ingrained in my brain. There's been dozens of great one time guest stars over the year, but how can I compare someone who's been in one episode against someone I watched playing a character for years? Like I remember the old man in The Survivors (TNG) being really good but how can I compare him to someone like Patrick Stewart or Brent Spiner who were in hundreds of episodes? I feel like I'd have to rewatch the episode (which I haven't seen for years) to know. I feel like with just regular and recurring actors then they're all on a level playing field.

But I think about things too much.
