True Blood 1.4 "Escape from Dragon House"

^OK WHAT DO YOU KNOW, MISS SASSY PANTS!?!?!

Hey, here's some gossip:

Anna P. and Stephen M. are dating in RL.

I hate her.

I don't really, but I'm jealous. *sniffs*

I could have been a contender!

I thought she was a lesbian. IMDB said so!

So, now that I'm watching the show, I'm gonna join in the discussions from two years ago.

All the episodes up until now have been character introductions as far as I can tell. It looks like the writers have a good bit of arc they're trying to set up for a long run.

Jason's character doesn't seem to be so useless. He seems like he's going to be the good-intentioned southern boy who goes the wrong way. Eventually, unless the writers do something interesting, his character will become totally superfluous and suck balls. Right now he's only comic relief from the forbidden bad-boy love affair between Sookie and Bill.

Bill's bad side was interesting to see. Stephen Moyer's acting, at first, was a bit over-dramatic and strained, trying to play a caricature of a vampire. Now, it looks like he's trying to be the "man of little words" as he's relying heavily on facial expressions and body language to act instead of using dialogue. We'll see where it goes. Character is a bit of Rice's romantic-and-nostalgic-for-times-since-gone vamps.

Sookie... grew-up-too-fast-because-she-had-super-telepathy-powers-self-reliant-girl-power-powder-puff-southern-belle. Paquin's performance is a bit dry, if not reserved.

Sam's a serial killer who likes to kill women in love with vamps. Please tell me I'm wrong and that the writers didn't make his character that transparently cliche.

Overall, lots of room for improvement, but I'm going to give the rest of the season the benefit of the doubt before watching others.

I don't think Stephen Moyer's acting, or (to be charitable) interpretation, ever improves. He's still strained and chews the scenery in more recent episodes. I don't know if that's how they agreed his character should be, or if it's just because he's not very good at acting, but imo it makes an already boring character annoying, to boot.

I was being fair as well. His (to put it in technical terms) mugging is so-so. He's going with the less-is-more approach. If done right, it can be very moving and convey a lot with only a little bit of body movement. It takes a long time to master and the only screen actor I've seen who can do it beautifully is Orson Welles.

After that, it's Laurence Olivier, and Anthony Hopkins. Clint Eastwood can do it to some extent. However, I think that's who he naturally is, but when he's acting it's slightly forced.

Moyer's is almost all forced. He has moments of clarity, like when Sookie asked if he would have fed on the cop and he gave a guilty look, but he only manages one of those looks per episode so far.

Bill's "it is true, I loured you here under false pretences" line in the latest episode was awful (but I suppose the writing was clunky too.) BUT I DON'T WANT TO POST SPOILERS.

I thought she was a lesbian. IMDB said so!

Bisexual!

The only spoiler I'm concerned about is proving that Sam is a serial killer. I'm fucking sure of it at this point.

I soooo want to spoil you at this point. But I won't.

nor shall I.
BWAHAHHAA

btw, it was fun re-reading our comments of yesteryears!

I have recently discovered that I have the facility on live television to rewind and watch a scene again and again and again.

It was during True Blood that I discovered this feature. Can't quite place my finger on what kind of scene it was that I wanted to watch again and again and again. Maybe it was Sookie ordering a burger or something. *whistles*

Greg, you're going to love Jason's story once his girlfriend (played by the lovely Lizzy Caplan) gets introduced. :D
