It was good, but I can see the same weaknesses happening here that occasionally happened in Six Feet under: sometimes, the show gets too downbeat because ALL the characters have intense conflict or threats going on at the same time. There's no comic relief, everywhere you turn, someone's in peril or anguish.
You have to let up, not everyone can be tied to the railroad tracks at the same time. This is the same problem with John Wells shows (ER, Third Watch, post-Sorkin West Wing, etc).
