Tara is white, and barely in the books. Lafayette died in the first book, and was always a very minor character. Jessica was never a character in the books, and Sookie and Bill stopped dating in book four or five.
This is one instance where the show is definitely better than the books. The books are a bit formulaic, and since they're all told in the first person, we only get Sookie's point of view, so she's in every single scene.
Arlene has a few scenes, but she's a complete bigot, and actually participated in a plot to kill Sookie in Dead and Gone, which is the 9th book. I just finished reading it this morning, and it was just OK. Like I said, the books are a bit too formulaic, and the fact that everything is told from Sookie's POV can get boring. Still, I'll check out Dead in the Family as soon as it gets to the library.
