Twenty20: Proper Cricket, or an abomination that needs to be abolished?

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
Thoughts?

"Iron Sheik called in [to the Howard Stern Show], and claimed [Kurt] Angle was a whore for leaving the WWE. Please don't expect any logic from Sheik. Sheik threatened to beat Angle up and talked about winning gold medals in the Olympics and Angle said, "You were never in the Olympics you lying son of a bitch." Then Baba Booey went to Wikipedia, that always accurate source and found out Sheik was never in the Olympics. Sheik started calling Angle a jew and a dickhead."

BDM, if you really interested in a constructive reply, believe me I could prattle (and that's what it would be to probably everyone on here) at great length. Somehow, I don't think you're all that interested though ;)

Well, there was an article in this morning's Wall Street Journal with half the people interviewed thinkiing it's an amazing way to play the game, and the other half believing that it's nothing more than a "home run derby".

I am interested in your thoughts, which do you prefer and why??

Firstly, have you watched any form of cricket? You would need to have a general knowledge of the game before I could provide any structured reply, or I'll be teaching you the basics of the game for at least 20 posts ;)

Watched? No. Well, aside from a couple of minutes watching Pakistanis play in a local park, no, I've not seen any cricket matches. No real way to see them in the U.S.

However, I'm familiar, at least rudimentarily, with the basic rules and objectives of the game. I'm familiar with most of the terms (wicket, bowl, bat, pitch, etc). I will admit that trying to understand the rules has given me a headache. I'm just interested to see if this new form of cricket more closely resembles baseball.

HE'S OUT FOR A DUCK

No, it doesn't resemble baseball. There are no bases. There is no such thing as a "home run". Two batters go in, and stay in until they get run out, or caught out, or bowled out.

I think Twenty20 is an excellent way to make cricket more popular.

I once explained the rules of cricket to two Frenchmen at University. It took over an hour and a half to get through the basics in both Test & Limited Overs matches.

And this was before Power Play, Free Hits, Duckworth/Lewis, Innings Forfeits in Tests and other such events.

^^^Uhhh...I thought I understood the basics of cricket!

Making cricket impenetrable through "you'll never understand it" is a little elitist for me. I used to work in the wine trade and it used to wind me up that the smoke and mirrors around appreciating grape types and even terroir (the soil that the wine grew on) causes many people to enjoy fine wine less.

The same can be applied to cricket. It is perfectly acceptable to enjoy watching cricket with a rudimentary knowledge of overs, runs, the role of the umpire and the ability to wear a funny wig. Eventually you will understand the position of fielders, and tactics around it - but for an afternoon spent drinking and watching sport there is very little to beat it.

^^What about NASCAR??

NASCAR is again spoilt by all the intellectuals and high brow people that attend.

If only it wasn't such an elitist sport!

I know, those egghead types really need to stick to professional wrestling, if you ask me!

Cricket IS easy to understand - take a mate who enjoys the game to a bar and watch a match, asking stupid questions. You'll soon get the gist....

You could learn enough by watching a couple of matches. If you want an explanation without knowing a ting however, that's another matter IMO.

Everything I know about cricket I learned from watching Merchant-Ivory films.

Oh, and that kid who learned how to throw a GOOGLY in Hope and Glory. Great film.

Oh, and Rupert Everett was an official for a match in Another Country, and kept ruling in favor of Cary Elwes, because he was still young, cute and shaggable. That didn't last long.

Hope & Glory is a brilliant film, I agree.

!!!

I’ve always loved the cricket, insists everyone

As England ended a 75-year wait for a test victory against Australia at Lords, absolutely everybody has claimed to be a long-time cricket lover.

The 115 run victory may have surprised the experts, but everybody else is claiming they knew England would win all along.

One supporter said, “I definitely love cricket - those Flintoff brothers Andrew and Freddie have done brilliantly, all the home runs they hit were amazing.”

“And then there were all the conversions they got at the end there, incredible!”

Ashes mania

With Ashes mania expected to hit the nation now that it seems we might actually win a series against Australia, long-time cricket lovers have outed themselves in workplaces everywhere.

“It’s funny, I’d never realised how much I love cricket until yesterday,” said one cricket fan.

“I mean, I’ve never been to a game, or watched it on the telly, and I wouldn’t know an England cricketer if he punched me in the face.”

“But it’s clear that subconsciously, I’ve always loved cricket to my very core, because when I heard the score, and that we’d beaten Australia, I couldn’t stop smiling.”

“So from this point on, I am a committed member of England’s fan base.”

“Right up until we lose the next match to Australia.”

Those Flintoff brothers taught us how to love again.
