Russia claims credit for Elena Rybakina's Wimbledon title


The Russian Tennis Federation was quick to claim Elena Rybakina as “our product” on her run to the women's title at Wimbledon. The last Russian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title was Maria Sharapova at the French Open in 2014. Moscow-born Sofia Kenin, who left Russia as a baby and plays for the United States, won the Australian Open in 2020.

Roger Federer drops out of tennis ATP ranking for the first time in 25 years; Djokovic, Kyrgios fall with no points awarded for Wimbledon
Federer had appeared in the singles rankings every week since he made his debut at age 16 in September 1997, tied for 803rd, and held the record for most time at No. 1 until Djokovic broke it.



Djokovic's drop and that of runner-up Nick Kyrgios from No. 40 to No. 45, despite reaching the first Grand Slam final of his career, are a result of the decisions by the WTA and ATP to not award any ranking points for Wimbledon in response to the All England Club's ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine.
 

Antidoping authorities allow exceptions for Ukrainians to compete in world championships


International doping authorities approved special exemptions for seven Ukrainian athletes, allowing them to compete in world championships though they hadn't been tested enough in the leadup due to the war in Ukraine.The Athletics Integrity Unit announced Friday that the other 15 Ukrainians, along with 134 athletes from five other countries categorized as "high risk" because of poor testing protocols, were entered into the championships. No athletes from any of the countries are being excluded. At the Olympics last year, 20 athletes were not allowed to participate under what's known as "Rule 15," which was designed to bring Ukraine, Bahrain, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Belarus into compliance with global testing rules.

Ukrainian Olympian Auctioning Off Silver Medal, Donating Money To War Efforts


Ukrainian Olympic gymnast Ruslan Mezentsev is auctioning one of his most precious belongings -- his silver medal -- and donating all the money to his home country ... so they have money to fund the fight against Russia. Mezentsev competed in the men's artistic all-around competition in Sydney in 2000 ... personally taking part in the floor exercise, pommel horse, and still rings. Ruslan scored a total of 28.725 ... bringing the team's total to 230.306, good enough for a silver medal. The Ukrainians finished just 1.613 points behind China ... who won the gold. Now, that silver medal is on the auction block at RR Auction ... where it already has 8 bids. The current price is $3,000 ... but expect that to rise! Mezentsev -- who's now 41 years old -- is from a town called Kropyvnytskyi in central Ukraine.

TWG 2022 CONTRIBUTES TO HELP UKRAINIAN ATHLETES AND SPORTS


The World Games 2022 presented a cheque for $54,000 today to support athletes and sports in Ukraine. In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, The World Games 2022 announced plans to donate $1 from every ticket and item of TWG 2022 merchandise sold since April 1 to help benefit the Ukrainian Community and Sports Movement through the Olympic Solidarity Fund. The formal cheque presentation was made Sunday, the final day of competition, just hours before the Closing Ceremony at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium.

WBC to remove Russian and Belarusian boxers from rankings


Russian and Belarusian boxers will be removed from the WBC rankings and therefore won't be eligible to fight for any of the organization's titles because of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced on Tuesday during the sanctioning body's convention in Acapulco, Mexico.The measure will last until boxing returns to war-torn Ukraine, a country that has been defending itself from Russian attacks since February, according to Sulaiman.

Colorado State sorry for 'Russia' chant at Ukrainian player


Colorado State issued a public apology to Utah State and Ukrainian guard Max Shulga after some of its fans chanted "Russia" at Shulga during. Shulga, who is from Kyiv, Ukraine, where his family still resides went to the free throw line late in the game, and the "Russia" chants could be heard from the Colorado State student section. Colorado State said in a series of tweets that the chant came from a "small group of individuals." On Sunday afternoon, Shulga issued a statement through Utah State that thanked the Colorado State administration and Rams coach Niko Medved for their "immediate support and understanding following the disappointing events during last night's game.'' Later this month will mark one year since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion has led to the ban of Russian players from numerous sporting events, including Wimbledon last year, and an ongoing debate over whether to allow Russian athletes at next year's Paris Olympics.

'What a day for hockey': Ukrainians, Jr. Bruins celebrate unity


The decision to have players from both teams line up arm-in-arm at center ice for the playing of the Ukrainian and United States' national anthems was pre-planned in what stood as a symbol of unity and solidarity. What no one anticipated was the spontaneous celebration that erupted among the 11- and 12-year-olds following the Ukrainian Selects' 3-1 victory at the International Peewee Hockey tournament on Saturday.

Russia, Belarus barred from next season's ice hockey worlds


Russia and Belarus teams were excluded by the International Ice Hockey Federation on Wednesday from all its world championships next season, including the women's event in the United States. The IIHF cited security concerns for players, competition staff and fans -- because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine -- to extend the exclusion that will stretch beyond two years when the 2023-24 season is over.

Wimbledon drops ban on Russians, lets them play as neutrals


Russian and Belarusian players will be able to compete at Wimbledon as neutral athletes after the All England Club on Friday reversed its ban from
last year. The players must sign declarations of neutrality and comply with "appropriate conditions," including not expressing support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "This was an incredibly difficult decision, not taken lightly or without a great deal of consideration for those who will be impacted," All England Club chairman Ian Hewitt said in a statement. Other tennis tournaments have allowed Russian and Belarusian players to compete as neutral athletes -- their nationalities are not listed in the brackets, official results or graphics on TV broadcasts of matches. But, as in some other team sports, Russia and Belarus were not permitted to participate in the Billie Jean King Cup or Davis Cup by the International Tennis Federation.
