Midnite Madness Kickstarts New Season​


Midnite Madness, the annual celebration to christen the start of basketball season, filled Trask Coliseum late Friday with plenty of cheers and excitement as the UNCW men's and women's basketball teams made their first public appearance of the 2022-23 season. Several hundred students and fans gathered to ring in the new campaign with a variety of entertaining activities. The doors to Trask Coliseum opened at 8:30 p.m. and the celebration kicked off at 9 p.m. The traditional event featured games for UNCW students, performances by the UNCW Dance Team, UNCW Cheerleaders and UNCW Pep Band, along with introductions of both teams.

Seahawks Wallop Wasps In Exhibition​


Senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes and sophomore guard Trazarien White poured in 16 points apiece as UNCW cruised to an 88-47 victory vs. Division II Emory & Henry in a men's basketball exhibition game on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks open the regular season late Monday with a 9 p.m. date against preseason No. 1 North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Joining Harden-Hayes and White in double figures was sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas with 15 points. The Greensboro, N.C., product also racked up a team-high six rebounds and four assists for the Seahawks, who shot 45.1 percent (32-of-71) from the field. The Wasps, limited to 32.6 percent (14-of-43) from the floor, were paced by sophomore wing Gabe Brown's 13 points in 19 minutes of action.

Seahawk Ocean Classic Opens Friday​


More than 50 women's tennis players from six schools will take the courts at UNCW this weekend for the Seahawk Ocean Classic sponsored by Atlantic Packaging. The Seahawks will be joined by Appalachian State, Davidson, George Washington, Longwood and VCU in the three-day event from Nov. 4-6, 2022. Play begins at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday. UNCW plans a special ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1:15 p.m. to honor longtime Associate Head Coach John Ware.

No. 1 Tar Heels Hold Down UNCW for 69-56 Win​


Caleb Love and RJ Davis scored 17 points apiece and No. 1 North Carolina began a season of grand expectations by pulling away from UNC Wilmington with a 69-56 victory Monday night. Armando Bacot added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Tar Heels, who were perhaps most impressive at the defensive end. UNCW shot just 29.8 % from the field.

The Tar Heels, who were the NCAA Tournament runner-up in April, began the new season with the top ranking for the first time in seven years. It's a record 10th time that North Carolina has been ranked No. 1 to start a season - one more than rival Duke. Trazarien White scored 19 points for UNCW, which faced a top-ranked team for the first time in program history. Skykeim Phillips had 11 points and Donovan Newby added 10. The Seahawks went 4-for-16 on 3-pointers.

North Carolina led 32-21 at halftime behind Davis' 11 points, but it wasn't easy. It was tied 17-17 with six minutes to go in the first half before a 12-2 run for the Tar Heels, who missed 10 of their first 14 shots prior to that spurt. The Tar Heels have won their first game of a season for 18 years in a row. North Carolina has won 21 consecutive Smith Center openers. North Carolina reserves managed only six points. UNCW held a 37-32 rebounding edge.

Seahawks Tap Chicago Big Man For 2023-24​


Matt Moore, a 6-9, 215-pound forward out of Joliet West High School in Chicago has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the 2022 College Basketball Invitational champions. He joins UW-Milwaukee transfer Donovan Newby as Chicagoland players on the Seahawk roster. Moore played his first three years of high school hoops at Hillcrest High School before moving on to the Joliet West program and Coach Jeremy Krieger for his final year. The versatile performer averaged 14.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists as a junior.

Seahawks Pick Up First Win Of New Season​


Sophomore guard Trazarien White's 17 points anchored four Seahawks in double-figures to help UNCW crush NCAA Division II Allen, 104-55, in the men's basketball home opener on Friday night at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks, who shot 59.7 percent (43-of-72), evened their record at 1-1 on the young season after a season-opening loss at top-ranked North Carolina coupled with Friday's blowout. It was Allen's first appearance of 2022-23.

Seahawk Basketball Show Makes 2022-23 Debut​


"The Seahawk Basketball Show" featuring Takayo Siddle debuts this week as the UNCW men's basketball team travels to The Bahamas for the Baha Mar Nassau Championship.The first of 15 shows will share highlights of UNCW's first five games, showcase sophomore guard Jamarii Thomad and preview the Thanksgiving trip to the Caribbean. Sponsors for the weekly show include Adams Beverage, Carolina Ford Dealers, Coastline Insurance, Flying Machine Brewery Company, Hardee's, Pepsi, Reeds Jewelers, Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux and Wilmington Health.The show is scheduled to be shown on the UNCW Athletics YouTube Channel and UNCWsports.com each week throughout the 2022-23 season.

Seahawks Reach Finals Of Baha Mar Tourney​


It was déjà vu all over again for the UNCW men's basketball team, which led the NCAA Division I ranks with the most double-digit comeback wins during a memorable 27-9 season one year ago. Chalk up the first one of 2022-23. Fueled by the electric play of senior guard Shykeim Phillips and key contributions off the bench, the Seahawks punched their ticket to the title game of the Baha Mar Nassau Championship by rallying past Vermont, 68-66, on Saturday at the Baha Mar Convention Center. UNCW is seeking its 13th in-season tournament championship and the second of Siddle's career after his 2021-22 club won the Asheville Mako Medical Classic in Asheville, N.C. UNCW wound up outscoring Vermont, 31-11, over the final 12 minutes and outscored the Catamounts, 45-33, in the final stanza to nail down the comeback victory.

UNCW erased an early deficit and called on its trademark stifling defense to rally past North Texas, 55-51, in the championship game of the Baha Mar Nassau Championship late Sunday at the Baha Mar Convention Center. The Seahawks raised their record to 5-3 on the young season and won their 13th in-season tournament title in program's history. Coupled with the championship of the Asheville Mako Medical Classic in 2021-22, it was Head Coach Takayo Siddle's second in-season title in three seasons. North Texas, 5-2, had a five-game winning streak snapped after defeating San Jose State and Long Beach State in the quarterfinals and semifinals and falling to the Seahawks in the finals.
