USFL: 2023

USFL vs. XFL: Stallions QB J'Mar Smith thinks a championship game between rival leagues will happen 'soon'

Birmingham quarterback J'Mar Smith's primary goal is leading the Stallions in their pursuit of back-to-back USFL titles. But if the opportunity to face the XFL's best team also presented itself, Smith would certainly welcome that opportunity, too. Given that the two leagues enforce different rules. Smith posed the interesting question of which rules would be utilized should the two leagues face off. Rules aside, a USFL-XFL championship game would certainly generate attention, especially during the dog days of summer. The Super Bowl, after all, was initially between the National Football League and the upstart American Football League. Both leagues are currently trying to coexist while becoming the first successful spring league. When they kick things off this weekend, the USFL will be the first spring league in nearly 40 years to return for a second consecutive season. The XFL, currently in its third incarnation, is nearing the end of its 10-game regular season.

State of the USFL: Embracing kickoff returns, increase competitiveness in season 2
This season, the USFL moved kickoffs back five yards from the 25 to the 20-yard line, a change designed to generate more returns, according to USFL head of officiating Mike Pereira. Through seven weeks of play, the USFL achieved that goal with 93.5% of kickoffs returned, compared with 38% in the NFL last season. The USFL had 81% of kickoffs returned last year.

USFL playoff picture: Here's who's in, who's out and everything to know entering Week 10

The 2023 USFL champion will be crowned in less than three weeks, but there's still plenty to be determined when it comes to the playoff picture. Much of it will come down to the final week of the regular season next Saturday and Sunday; we did, however, learn a few things in Week 9. For starters, we learned that while the defending champion Birmingham Stallions didn't always look like the best team this season, make no mistake: the Stallions are the team to beat. Birmingham became the first team to clinch a playoff spot -- the only team to do so with just one regular-season week remaining -- after dismantling the Houston Gamblers.

South Division playoff race

The Stallions (7-2) are in the playoffs. The New Orleans Breakers (6-3) sit a game back, and split their two games with Birmingham during the regular season, so they still have an outside shot at the top seed. The other two South teams -- the Houston Gamblers (5-4) and Memphis Showboats (5-4) -- need a win in Week 10 combined with a Breakers loss to have any chance at getting the No. 2 seed.

North Division playoff race

There's a strong argument to be made that the USFL's four best teams reside in the South Division and its four worst in the North. Take the Pittsburgh Maulers, for example -- a team that was 2-6 last week yet still controls its own playoff destiny. The good news for the Stars -- who lost to the Stallions in the USFL title game last year -- and every North team is that, as the XFL title game proved, regular-season records don't mean anything in the playoffs.

Birmingham defeated the Pittsburgh Maulers to repeat as USFL champions

The Birmingham Stallions are the USFL champions -- again -- defending their title thanks to stunning performances from Alex McGough and Deon Cain. McGough threw for four touchdown passes, connecting with Cain on three of them, while leading Birmingham to a 28-12 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Cain took home the USFL Championship Game MVP honors after finishing with four catches for 70 yards and three touchdowns, two coming in the second half to put the game away for the Stallions. His 40-yard touchdown reception with 6:41 to go put Birmingham up 28-12 and sealed the championship. Cain finished with 172 all-purpose yards in the victory. The Stallions have won their 21st game in two seasons to successfully defend their title. Birmingham is 21-3 since the reincarnation of the USFL in 2022. Pittsburgh, the North Division champion, ended its season at 5-7. The Maulers did get four field goals from Chris Blewitt, including a 55 yarder prior to halftime, but were held out of the end zone. They finished with just 202 total yards as Trey Williams went 24 of 37 for 143 yards in the loss.

Cowboys sign USFL standout Brandon Aubrey to vie for kicker job

The Dallas Cowboys have finally added another kicker to their roster, signing Brandon Aubrey, who spent the past two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL. The Cowboys did not take a hard look at the veteran free agent market, which includes Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby, and last year's kicker, Brett Mahe, was not inclined to re-sign with the team after putting up a franchise-record 137 points but struggling in the playoffs by missing five point-after attempts.
