Virtuality

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
I'm about to watch it.

I liked it, quite a lot actually. (DON'T READ ON BEFORE YOU WATCH WACKY OR YOU'LL BE SPOILED AND THERE'S SOME STUFF YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED ON)

So, yeah, I liked the pilot. It was great mix of 2001/Sunshine style "hard" sci-fi and some sort of Big Brother like reality TV show. I liked the technology in the show as it was a nice mix of current day and probable future technology. The fact that they have it set in a centrifuge to give them gravity is WONDERFUL.

There's a lot of characters, all of which are nicely introduced and well defined and acted (even if I can't remember half their names). The psychologist was awesome, as was JIMMY JOHNSON, and Sienna Guillory as that hot botanist lady was hot (she's hot and English).

It's also nice they managed to have a probper gay couple without going "HEY LOOK EVERYONE IT'S A GAY COUPLE ON TV DO YOU SEE HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE!!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" like other writes do.

I was a bit iffy at first on the whole virtual reality thing, but I think it was quite nicely exectued, with the CGI being just that little bit fake so it actually looks like virtual reality (and it wasn't just bad CGI, as the CGI of the space ship was awesome). The fact thay they managed to turn a funny cheesy secret agent scene into a really quite diturbing rape scene really played the dangers of this virtual reality stuff well, too.

And then there's (SPOILERY SPOILER) the captain dying. Which totally came out of nowhere. And yeah it was a bit cheesy having him somehow still be in the Civil War program but that's what they can explore in the full series.

That is, if they get a full series. I really hope they do, as there's a lot they could do with it. There was a nice feeling of being contained on the ship with the crew, and I hope that's something they keep by rarely going outside it and not having guest actors except in the virtual programs. BUT the problems are that A) this is an intelligent, interesting show on FOX and we all know how that works out, and B) it got VERY LOW ratings due to it being sandwiched between Farrah dying and MJ dying, which is sad but FOX will just see that as it apparently not being a good show (which I think it could be).

So yeah. Good pilot, hope to see more, Sienna Guillory is hot.

Yes my first thought was "I have to tell Tomtrek the botanist was hot."

I enjoyed it too. The first 45 minutes were a bit hard to follow as there were so many characters I couldn't keep track of them, but eventually I had a handle on most of them (the commander's name was Pike, SEE IT'S A STAR TREK REFERENCE.) Jimmy Johnson was quite cool. The reality producer looked like Spike. They should have got Spike to play him (though he was good anyway.) Acting was good all round.

I like the more realistic approach. The CGI was really good and the blast off from Jupiter was a highlight. The music added to that scene too and there was some good music throughout.

I liked the scene where the doctor was painting a landscape and it was becoming real around him in the virtual reality. INVENTIVE.

The premise was interesting and there's a lot they could explore, but the main problem is that there's probably never going to be a series. And it doesn't really work as a standalone. So...it was kind of pointless, on the whole.

The botanist was the hottest, but the black girl was quite nice too (was she going to the virtual doctor because she's secretly pregnant?) and Billie looked hot when she was singing the Munsters theme in Japanese (according to IMDB that's what it was) but then she got raped so that kind of ruined it.

COME ON FOX, JUST PICK IT UP AND SHIT.

I havnt a clue what either of you are talking about, but it sounds excellent.

I missed the first hour, but the second hour was great. Very intense!

It certainly had a lot of potential, but there's no point getting excited really since there's not going to be any more (why did they decide that then air the pilot anyway?)

I guess they figured that as they spent money on it they might as well show it.

Oh Fox...

I don't think they've decided once and for all, but the low ratings obviously won't help. Doug Drexler's been blogging about it for a few days (including a feature on the CGI) and he seems hopeful it'll get picked up somehow, so there must be a chance.

Anyway, I quite liked it. I found the first half a bit slow and I'm kind of iffy about the reality show elements. We've all seen enough people in a diary room to know how they really act and it's weird having actors in character looking into the camera talking to you. Did work well for Dead Set, of course, but that wasn't a serious drama, so it's different.

The characters were all pretty interesting. They've certainly got lots of potential, as does the rest of the show. Good ending, too. They could all be in VR on the ship, or maybe even back on Earth.

Will the reality tv angel continue now that they've passed the "go/no go" point? Surely there's point where they're too far from Earth for it to be practical?

They might just store the episodes for when they get back in range, since they edit them on board (which I thought was dumb, btw).

Well they made the point of saying that the communications array was down (which is why they had to go EVA), so they can't broadcast the show anyway.

The writers could use that as an excuse the play down the reality show element if they want.

Or "HAL'S TRYING TO KILL US, FUCK THE FUCKING REALITY SHOW!! AAARGHHAKHAKAHKAHKGASP"

OR NOTHING SINCE THE SHOW WILL NEVER GET MADE

I didn't even realise all the VR sets were virtual. I thought they might have been put through a filter to make them look more virtual...or something.

I realised everything was CGI, but I look out for that sort of thing. The opening shot when all the grass was cg worried me because I didn't realise it was "crap" on purpose.

WAS THE HORSE CGI?
