I want to smell dark matter
John Wick Chapter 2 - If you liked the first one you'll like this one because it's pretty similar but bigger in every way. I guess after the first was a hit they could spend more money on this because it looks slicker, the action is more elaborate and there's like ten times as many kills. And it's fun! These movies are really silly but they get the tone just right somehow. They don't take themselves too serious, but they take themselves seriously enough that you're not laughing at how stupid it is. It's a cool kind of silly rather than a silly kind of silly? Like the bit where he was walking through the train station having a lowkey shootout with another assassin. And the fact that it exists in a world where seemingly everyone is an assassin. Those are silly things but they work! One thing the original had over this one though was a more personal story (they killed his fucking dog!) whereas in this one it's basically just "John Wick versus the World" and the only stakes are staying alive. But otherwise it improves on the first in every way.
 
Yes, I loved it and actually saw it in the cinema twice. Both films have a lot of character to them, with slightly surrealist ideas, like the assassin hotel and those sort of 1940s telephone exchange ladies. It does go too far sometimes (he got hit by a car twice in this and both times carried on like nothing happened), but for the most part they get away with it.

Highlights:
“It’s not just any man... it’s John. Fucking. Vick!”
The guy getting sideswiped by a car.
The thing with the pencil.
Anytime he reloads and he’s sat on some guy who’s just waiting to die.
Anytime Lovejoy says “ex.........communicaaaado”
When Morpheus goes a bit Sisko with “Somebody PLEASE... get... this... maaaaan. A gun.”
The ridiculous ending when literally everyone is an assassin with a shit phone.
 
I liked how they had beloved character actor Peter Stormare set up the pencil thing by mentioning his pencil kills at the start.
 
Baby Driver - This was...okay. I've enjoyed every other movie (and episode of Spaced) directed by Edgar Wright a lot. And this is certainly very impressive in terms of editing and syncing the action up to the soundtrack and looking cool. There's some really impressive sequences: the opening car chase in particular is very memorable and gets you pumped for the rest of the movie. But I don't know if the rest of it ever really lived up to that promise? This is a staight-up action movie rather than using the action as a metaphor for other things like his films with Simon Pegg, and I'd be fine with that if it managed to make me care about the characters more. The main guy's acting was okay but his character isn't that sympathetic. The female lead was kind of dull and underwritten. Kevin Spacey (urgh)'s character takes a bizarre turn near the end. Really Jamie Foxx was the actor who impressed me most in it (and what was with Jon Bernthal being in one scene then disappearing?) So yeah there's some exhilirating sequences and it's probably way better than a typical Fast and Furious type movie (I've never watched one) it never really transcends to become more than just cool?

I was going to watch Justice League today (without paying for it) but I just couldn't bring myself to. So I watched Mad Max: Fury again instead. I think I made the right decision! Not a review since I've probably posted about it before, but you should watch Fury Road if you haven't.

The Death of Stalin - I think the trailer for this made it look more like a total farcical comedy, like The Thick of It in Stalin times. It's not really like that, it's much darker, by the end especially all the comedy is gone (which is appropriate given how it ends.) There's definitely a lot of funny parts, of course, like pretty much everything Jason Isaacs says and the opening scene, it's just not constant laugh out loud comedy like The Thick of It or Veep when Veep was good. Don't expect much creative swearing, put it that way (but there's still swearing!) But yeah the cast is great, especially the guy who played Beria, and if you like Iannucci stuff you've probably already watch it anyway.
 
Paddington 2 - A while ago Paddington was on tv and I left it on because I was just lying down doing nothing probably depressed or something. I noticed that it was a visually quite interesting movie and thoughts things like "that's actually pretty impressive" as Paddington got into some elaborate comedy action scene. And as I kept watching I thought "I'd probably have loved this when I was a child" then ended up watching it all and thinking "okay that was genuinely a good children's movie." I kept seeing people on Twitter saying how good the sequel was. And I'm sure we've all enjoyed children's movies as adults so really I don't have to explain all this, I can watch what I want OKAY. Anyway, this sequel was probably even better. What I like is the innonence of it. There's no cynical humour, no nodding jokes about wanking for the adults watching, it's all just pure joyful animated bear fun. It really works because it's just so nice, Paddington goes to prison after being framed for stealing a pop-up book (yes) and ends up making prison a nicer place and melting the heart of even the most hardened criminal. IT MADE ME FEEL GOOD. And the cast is great with a huge amount of recognisable British actors, best of all being Hugh Grant as the hilarious villain. So yeah if you're totally opposed to watching a movie for children that doesn't pander to adults then you probably shouldn't watch it but it's genuinely a lovely and beautifully made bear adventure.
 
Mission: Impossible - Fallout - You shoud know what you're getting with these by now. Lots of cool action sequences and a plot filled with twists that are pretty hard to make sense of at times (at one point in the middle Henry Cavil's character says "Why did you have to make this so fucking complicated?" and it's totally a meta line.) Fortunately this one has some of the best action scenes in the whole series. All the chases and the skydiving bit and the crazy helicopter finale were all great. I'm sure they used lots of CGI but it all looks more real than the typical CGI blockbuster (Tom Cruise being crazy and jumping off buildings for real probably helps.) I wish Rebecca Ferguson's character got a bit more action though or even her own spin-off movie but i guess that would take attention away from the big man himself. Anyway it's great if you like these movies!
 
I saw this last week too.
I loved when Ethan dropped the payload onto the other helicopter and did a clever one liner, only for it to miss.

He genuinely did the halo jump too.
 
I loved the halo jump bit because it was completely pointless. They could have just walked right in the front door but they decided to dive through frickin' lightning instead!
 
We need one of Infinity War, obviously. Unless you've already done it. Then obviously not.

I have watched it. I mean the woman who was the arms dealer (who I'm pretty sure wasn't in the last one) not Elsa...
 
Yeah, I think she was also working for MI6, although not directly so they had plausible deniability
