Wacky Reviews: Various Movies 2018

Game Night - Comedy starring Jason Bateman as a pretty typical Jason Bateman character, but he's very very good at playing that type of character so I'm not complaining really, and Rachel McAdams who gets to be funny too so that's good! It was funny and had a good plot (that goes SLIGHTLY off the boil at the end but not bad enough to ruin it.) Fun all the way through with some laugh out loud moments and characters who aren't too annoying. As well as the two leads the cast is all very good with Jesse Plemons really stealing every scene he was in. I liked it and would certainly recommend it!

A Quiet Place - Horror drama type thing starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also directed and co-wrote it) about a world where blind monsters roam the Earth and people have to stay almost completely silent at all times to avoid being ripped apart. So for a lot of the movie there's no talking (but there is some and lots of music, so it's not really a silent film or anything) so if you're a big fan of talking you won't like it! And if you don't like things where there's long moments of silence but then suddenly there's a loud noise to make you jump you won't like it either. But I did like it as the world the movie created was very well done and I liked all the details of how the family survived without making noise. The actors all managed to convey what was going on without speaking (there's sign language) with the child actors being pretty good too even. All the parts with the monsters were very tense and thrilling and I'd recommend it!

I loved A Quiet Place. I watched it in the cinema and it was the quietist audience ever (thankfully). I don’t think it was out of politeness - the film’s just so tense that you feel you shouldn’t break the silence until the characters do.

Someone should have done a special screening where people dressed up as the monsters, sneaked in, and scared anyone who made a noise during the screening. Err but that would only work if you didn't know it was coming and someone would probably have a heart attack.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle - Yes I watched the Jumanji reboot. Don't judge me! It's not like the original's some timeless classic or anything and I remember this getting good reviews. Plus the Rock and Karen Gillan (in shorts.) Anyway, it was good for what it was. The actors were all amusing playing the avatars of the teens (Jack Black played a girl!) The special effects were pretty good and even if it looked a bit fake that kind of worked since they were supposed to be in a video game. There were funny moments. It went on too long, and didn't really rise above the level of being a good kids movie, but it was fine! Karen Gillan wearing a skimpy outfit actually had a story reason (that movie was pretty woke in some ways if you like that kind of thing!) but also it was Karen Gillan in a skimpy outfit. I'd recommend it if you're a kid but you shouldn't be reading this if you are.

Venom - Everyone seems to agree that this movie is bad. But there's some people who'll argue that it's a "so bad it's good" kind of way and that it's really hugely entertaining and fun in its badness. They'll argue that Tom Hardy gives a crazy funny performance and that there's a bit with Woody Harrelson in a bad wig that's hilarious. And I won't really argue either of these pints: Hardy did make me laugh a few times with his crazy reactions to things and some funny line readings (though there's also times where you can't understand what he's saying.) Woody did look funny in that wig...but it was in the mid credits scene. You have to get through the whole movie to get there. And most of the movie is REALLY BAD. The script is terrible. It has some of the worst dialogue you'll ever hear. It's also pretty slow, it's like an hour before Hardy goes full Venom. The action sequences aren't good enough to recommend it either so don't watch it for those (the final all CGI fight between Venom and Riz Ahmed is horrible.) So NO, I don't think it's so bad it's good, I just think it's bad. Wath a five minute "Tom Hardy being funny in Venom" video on YouTube if you want, but don't watch Venom. Venom bad.

I continue to watch lots of moives!

Incredibles 2 - It was very good! I liked it. I remember the first Incredibles was a really big deal at the time, whereas this one doesn't seem to have had such a huge impact (or maybe I missed the huge impact?) Like I remember people quoting the "no capes!" thing from the first one a lot. And at the start of this one I was kind of weirded out by it carrying on immediately from when the last one ended, but the last one came out fourteen years ago and I can't remember things from fourteen years ago! But once it got going it was very good (and it's not like the opening sequence wasn't a lot of fun!) The action scenes were great, lots of imaginative use of super powers. It was funny and the character stuff was all solid (I was worried there would be a lot of comedy about the dad being crap at raising the kids and needing the mum back but it was actually handled well in the end.) The baby was cute. The villain was a bit weak though (and I thought "that character's probably the secret villain" as soon as she appeared) and like I said it didn't change the way I view superheroes or anything like the first one did for people. But not everything has to do that.
