SEATTLE (AP) — Legal marijuana possession becomes a reality in Washington state Thursday, and some people plan to celebrate the new law by breaking it.

Voters in Washington and Colorado last month made those the first states to decriminalize and regulate the recreational use of marijuana. Washington's law takes effect Thursday and allows adults to have up to an ounce of pot — but it bans public use of marijuana, which is punishable by a fine, just like drinking in public.

Nevertheless, some people planned to gather at 12 a.m. Thursday to smoke up beneath Seattle's Space Needle. Others planned to party outside Hempfest headquarters in Seattle.

Seattle Police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb doesn't expect officers to write many tickets. Thanks to a 2003 law, marijuana enforcement remains the department's lowest priority.

this is a good, although fairly weak step (1 ounce? Only pot?) in the right direction.

what really needs to happen is the supply side legalized and regulated, because this law doesn't tackle the fundamental problem that the drug trade is controlled by criminals, and it doesn't make it any safer to obtain and use the stuff.

Colorado's 64th amendment to their state's constitution lays out a much better law than the WA laws. Yes, it's only a 1oz possession, but that's more to prevent Fed fuckery. Anything over an oz is gonna get scrutinized by the DEA or some other Federal law enforcement agency.

Strangely enough, in a person's home they're allowed to have three mature and three immature plants behind a locked door. Marijuana stores will be allowed to stock larger quantities and sell pot just like alcohol stores. Also, like alcohol stores they're limited by the blue laws. Meaning, if a community doesn't want a marijuana shop in their town, they can overturn its construction or opening.

They're still working out the finer points of how to deal with the Feds but they've crafted the amendment in such a way that really limits how much the Feds can screw with the citizens about it.

This happened with alcohol back in the early 1930's with alcohol prohibition. It was a domino effect. One state legalized in a fairly limiting way, then three or four years later, 36 states had legalized alcohol. This led the government to ratify an amendment to the US constitution repealing the 18th amendment.

I give this pot prohibition no longer than Obama's term in office before we have a new constitutional amendment.

The people who crafted that amendment to CO's constitution did a REALLY careful job to mimic alcohol regulation laws and limit attempts by the Fed law enforcement to make this legalization look bad.

Question: Doesn't marijuana stay in the blood/hair for a long time? If so, and your place of employment does drug testing, can they still fire you for smoking? After all, alcohol is legal, but you can still be fired drinking on the job or having it in your system.

Shit I grew legal weed for medical for a few years. Now I want to go with aeroponics to grow.

$2000 and I can get a growers and dealers permit.

Iv grown some big fucking plants, buds so big I had to lean them on each other or they would fall over. donky dick buds as big as beer cans. Fucking whole house would reek when I would harvest,, afraid the neighbors could smell it.

I can also make some wicked hash oil. Gets you so stoned you can get lost in your own home.

Indeed. THC can be stored in fat cells for up to six weeks, depending on diet, exercise, and the levels of THC consumed. However, there is a fairly new test that uses saliva to determine if you've smoked in the last 24 hours.

Blood tests are also a good indicator of if someone has smoked in the last 24 hours.

Problem is, a lot of employers still use urinalysis as a screening method. I'm sure that if you can produce a prescription for it, such as in the case of opiate derivatives, I'm sure that some employers in the medically-legal states might overlook your use. I mean, if you can show up to work, high on vicodin and benzos, why can't you come to work high on pot?
