Westboro Baptist Church sued for $11 million

All I can say is I dare Fred To come to my neck of the woods..
If he does, he will be arrested, if I don't get to him first..

Isn't there a way to play hardball then? If you can't get them out without suing them out, why not target their gatherings with peaceful protests?

The bikers have been doing that all along. They sometimes surround the cemetery and rev their bikes to block out the idiot's singing and chanting.

I think you will see more states enact legislation to put a stop to this kind of harassment at funerals. I don't consider that an unfair hampering of free speech if the statutes continue along the same vein - prevent protesting 1 hour before and 2 hours after within 300 yd. of a funeral, memorial service, procession, burial. The rights of the people involved in the burial of their dead to not be molested need to be equally protected.

I can totally agree with that eloisel. If they only enact necessary minimal legislation and don't try to take it any further. I think I just don't trust the govt when it comes to stuff like that.. but I agree these idiots need to be stopped.

US anti-gay church to resume protests at funerals of soldiers

Armed with signs shouting "thank God for dead soldiers," a radical anti-gay US church plans to resume its controversial funeral protests Friday despite being ordered to pay 11 million dollars to the family of a fallen soldier offended by their hateful songs and slogans.

Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church hailed Wednesday's jury verdict as yet another opportunity to spread its message that God is punishing the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality.

"We will continue to warn you of your impending doom as long as our God gives us breath," church leaders said in a press release lined with biblical references and pictures of the signs its members flaunt at funerals.

"Not only did you fail to stop our preaching, but our message has gone to the entire world."

The fringe group of fire and brimstone Baptists from Topeka, Kansas has been courting controversy for more than 17 years.

The church first gained national notoriety when they picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a Wyoming student who was murdered in 1998 for being gay.

They have since picketed the funerals of Frank Sinatra and Bill Clinton's mother, celebrated the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as an act of God's wrath, and have even targeted Santa Claus and the Ku Klux Klan.

Funded in part by lawsuits against those who try to block the protests and violate a constitutional right to free speech, the church members travel the country on a near-daily basis and have held an estimated 30,000 pickets.

Their funeral protests are laced with anti-gay slurs.

At one protest attended by AFP five women sang and danced as they held up signs saying "God hates fags," "fag vets" and "America is doomed." The group also has a wide repertoire of songs like "This Land is Fag Land" and "God Hates America."

The group's presence at the funerals of dozens of soldiers across the country has sparked a grassroots movement of bikers determined to drown out the jeers and taunts.

While Westboro's congregation remains stable at around 70 to 100 people -- most of whom are the extended family of founder Fred Phelps -- the ranks of the Patriot Guard Riders has swelled to more than 117,000 in the past two years.

If the Westboro protestors show up as planned at the funerals of Sergeant Scott Turner in Norton, Kansas and Staff Sergeant Larry Rougle in West Jordan, Utah on Friday, their signs will be masked by an honor guard of flag-waving bikers.

But the father of a soldier awarded 10.9 million dollars on Wednesday after his son Matthew's funeral was picketed last year hopes the verdict he has won will block the protest completely.

"I basically want to shut them down," said Albert Snyder. "I don't expect to collect 10 million dollars, but I do intend to collect everything they have."

Westboro insists it will win the case on appeal, but Snyder's lawyer said they have a good chance of proving that the constitutional right to free speech has limits.

"The reality is that the First Amendment has survived 200 years without anyone protesting funerals, and I think it's safe to say that if this group is shut down and cannot protest funerals, the First Amendment will survive another 200 years," said Sean Summers, Snyder's attorney.

Looks like WBC is just gonna keep pushing their bullshit.

Phelps & Scum see themselves as the persecuted in this scenario. I saw a clip of Shirley, one of Phelps' daughters, wherein she is whining about this generation of "tolerant, loving" etc. people having screamed insults at her and her cohorts, shot at them, and vandalized their church and their vehicles.

While I certainly understand the violent reactions to Phelps & Scum, it isn't the right way to combat them. The Motorcycle Patriot Guard and Angel Action groups are fairly effective in counteracting P&S presence. However, they don't stop him. The news media needs to stop filming and presenting the protests. P&S desire to "get their message out." No film, no getting their message out beyond the people at the funeral. The police need to inform P&S that they will be treated like any citizen and will not stand by to guard them during their protest activities. If P&S experiences any trouble, they can do like the rest of us and call 911 and wait.

Mostly, without putting ourselves into a situation where we have to create stricter and more defined laws to protect ourselves from unreasonable people, we need to shun Phelps & Scum. The grand daughters have said it - they don't want to be part of us or be our friend unless we believe and behave exactly as they do. One of the daughters has said if we don't like what they say or do, we can shut the hell up and avert our eyes. Fine - I suggest that they receive the separation from us they proclaim and that no one should employ them, they should be asked to leave any place of business that has a reserve the right to serve policy, and they should receive no recognition of any kind from anyone. P&S as a whole needs to be reduced from media stars to filth under the rug.

"Not only did you fail to stop our preaching, but our message has gone to the entire world."
Oh great, their mentality stretches to the level of a bad troll OMG YOU REPLIED THEREFORE YOU ARE PWNED LOL ME = 1337 h4XX0r 1op928ipojsdflkj;oiasd;sd;''s''s

I agree that the media is complicit in keeping them and their message in the forefront. It's the same thing that happened with Terri Shiavo.. wackos gathered, and the media showed up in force, bringing out more wackos.. bringing out more media.. on and on.

Funded in part by lawsuits against those who try to block the protests and violate a constitutional right to free speech, the church members travel the country on a near-daily basis and have held an estimated 30,000 pickets.

I love that part.. their use of civil courts has finally been against them.

Initially when I read about all this I was worried about free speech , but now that I've thought about it more and read what some of you have to say, I realize that free speech isn't threatened by this case. I don't believe we have a constitutional right to harass people. If they want to protest gays in the military, that is their right, but they could do that just as effectively in front of the White House. They'd still get the media coverage they desire, because the media isn't going to let something so vile and hateful slide by without attention.

Yeah - I hear you. No one is asking that they be kept from speaking in an appropriate venue.

They aren't protesting gays in the military. They are saying that the whole United States are gay enablers and because of that God is killing people who are fighting in a war. They don't seem to consider that Muslims are not gay enablers by P&S standards but they are being killed too.

Well A#1 nowhere in the Good Book does it say that God hates homosexuals. God loves all of His children. He doesn't like their lifestyle but then I'm pretty sure God's not too crazy about evangelists tormented His broken children in His name.

Or whores who stuff their bodies with alcohol, fat and Opioids. Not naming any names.

"God hates fags" church in new wrangle

It just keeps getting better!

SUMMARY: A day after the fundamentalist church was ordered to pay nearly $11 million for anti-gay funeral picketing, a prominent member of Westboro Baptist is in court for flag mutilation and child abuse.

Phelps-Roper, 50, is to appear in Sarpy County Court on Monday on charges of flag mutilation, negligent child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disturbing the peace. The charges were filed after Phelps-Roper allowed her 10-year-old son to stand on the flag while protesting at a Bellevue soldier's funeral in June.

Protesting a funeral is low enough, but to then endanger one's own child while doing it?

I hope this bitch gets sent away for a long time...

Hiya Gurk! I still have no idea why you think I have lizard lips. I'm no Angelina Jolie but my lips are nice. Supple, soft, not too juicy, not too pencil like, just a nice set of smackers. My lips make the perfect lip mark on a piece of paper, it's quite pretty.

How about you? How have you been? I see you haven't undergone a personality transplant as you're still as boring as ever. What else have you been up to?

I've been fine, same old troll and roll. I see you survived the fires without a singe. Good for you.

Now ... just admit you ran to the mirror and puckered your lips and looked at your mouth from as many different angles as you could manage.

I'll bet you even got a second mirror to get even more angles, didn't you?

:bigass:

Nope. I apply and re-apply lipstick all throughout the day, I am very familiar with my lips (minds out of the gutters boys and girls). My poor baby niece has no lips but she's so gorgeous it really doesn't matter. And I know what you're thinking but she gets it from her mother not me. I have nice, normal lips and my fiancee loves to smooch them which is all that really matters. ;)

So I'm glad you're doing well and trolling your troll. And yes, ashes and smoke but no fire, a lot of things would have to burn before a fire ever got to me and that would be a serious national tragedy.
