I'm sitting here watching the Mets, and for some reason I wanted to post this -- THE PROCESS OF MAKING A TK AV:
1. Start with a square blank image area. Ultimately you will end up reducing the image to 200x200 pixels, but that doesn't mean you should start working at that size. Make it nice and big (this is 470x470 at 150 dpi) so that your images will look nice and crisp.
2. Pick a background. It's usually a color, texture or landscape, but in this case, it's a close-up of the homicidal kid's face from Pearl Jam's "Jeremy" video.
3. Add the TK logo. Place it early so that you can play with the placement as you decide how it will relate to the other images as you place them. In this case, I went with one of my more modernized riffs on the logo rather than the traditional lettering, and gave it a slight transparency, as it seemed to have a nice effect against the kid's screaming face. You can also type "Troll Kingdom" in text, instead of using a logo or the abbreviated "TK". If you do, you may want to place it later after all the images are set.
4. Assemble the images that speak to your current mood. Pick the people/characters who are speaking to you at the moment, and find key moments in their existences that exude why they speak to you.
4a. Place the first image. Pick the image that you think will be the easiest to withstand other images being placed over it, without losing the defining portion of the subject. This is Kathleen Battle, an opera singer who was at the top of her field in the 80s and early 90s. Her voice is peerless, but she was very difficult to work with. in fact the Metropolitan Opera fired her from a production for bad behavior, and she was ultimately blackballed from most opera houses. Since then, she has only made concert appearances. In this picture, she in ecstatically hitting a key note in an American Christmas carol during a concert at Carnegie Hall in 1991.
5. Place your next image. This is Laurent, the main character from Louis Malle's coming of age film Murmur of the Heart. In this moment, he is at a brothel with a prostute, paid for by his older brothers so that he can lose his virginity. The look on his face is because it's the first time someone has revealed their naked, willing body to him, as the prostitute asks him if he thinks her breasts are nice. Note the inclusion of the gilded dressing mirror to his right, which sort of dictated where the image needed to be placed in the frame.
6. Continue placing images and playing with the layout to best feature them. We started with the kid from the Jeremy video, but since he is now already mostly covered, I thought he deserved to be featured in the foreground as well. This moment is when he is cocking his rifle, preparing to gun down his classmates.
However, the quality of the video is not good and I couldn't do a decent enough job of cropping around him (for my standards), so he got cut.
This is Ian Terry, winner of BB14, and one of the few BB winners who I rooted for all season and was truly happy to see win. He is cute and very intelligent, but also extremely shy and socially awkward. He spent hours each day sitting upright in the hammock in the backyard, rocking back and forth. Here we see him breaking down after just winning the key Final 5 HoH competition, which surely saved him from elimination as he was the next target in the house. This win paved the way for him to eventually take it all. I decided to place him behind Laurent, because hello, creamy shoulder of a shirtless twink.
7. When done placing images, decide the final placement of the TK logo, and add your name or personal branding. In this case I liked where the logo was, and simply decided where it should go in the heirarchy of images so that it was somewhat covered but still identifiable. Most people add their TK username in text, but since I have my own icon, I popped it on in what I thought was the best location. Frequently I try to make it part of one of the images, like a lamp fixture in the Mad Men office, or even a man's cufflink. But this time I felt like having it play a more prominent role in the layout.
8. Step back and look a the whole image and decide if it has balance and harmony. Do you like it? I liked it.
9. Resize the image to 200 by 200 pixels and upload it as your avatar in your User Settings. Then enjoy a nice beverage while staring at it in wonder, amazed at the awesome talent you possess.
