What is this "XD" thing?

I started noticing it on YouTube comments but put it down to typos. Now I'm seeing it on message boards too and it's showing up far too often to be a coincidence. What is it, what does it mean and is it something I'll have to destroy?

It's means the same as lol. It's been around for a few years XD. Turn your head to the side, it looks like Cartman's face when he's smiling and his eyes turn into an X.

I dunno.. I just know that when I first started hanging out on forums 3 or 4 yrs ago everyone was already doing it. It probably started in some gaming forum somewhere.

The ones that annoy me are the right side up ones like -__- and ^__^.
