What's the point of @'ing someone's username?

None of the people I just @'d will get an alert telling them about it, SO WHAT'S THE POINT of being able to put an @ in front of someone's username, EH CHAPS?

Somehow I now get an alert when I sign in to TK that CaptainWacky has posted a thread. Occasionly I get one about someone else but I CAN'T REMEMBER WHO!

I was also already following you Cassie and I think I get some notifications from your posts too. The notifications JUST started happening-within the last month-I think I changed something in my profile one day or clicked on a button and said, "I wonder what this does".
