Where is the Random Thread of Randomness stuff that doesn't belong in other threads thread?

Back in the golden age of the Pedobear memes, there was one that said "I like my women like I like my Scotch: 12 years old and mixed up with Coke."

Bah. Somehow forgot to account for Christmas Mass. I've managed to miss church the past few weeks so I don't have any kind of bulletin telling what time services are. 5 years ago I'd have just Googled it but every year the Internet gets more and more useless and I don't know if I have the energy for the disappointment of whatever banal confused idiocy Google AI will tell me, a page of ads, and then a couple confused links. Plus I've got prime rib to cook. 2 1/2 hours, so if I want it for lunch, going to church adds a wrinkle (I worry about a 500 degree oven burning down the house while I'm out--turkey at 325 or whatever it cooks at is fine, but 500 degrees is a bit hot--even if it's only for 20 minutes and then you turn it off.) Should've found out where there was a midnight mass last night. I enjoy a Christmas Midnight Mass. But somehow that didn't occur to me. Ah well. Spilt milk. Maybe I'll see if there's any afternoon services anywhere.

I've started doing prime rib for Christmas and maybe I shouldn't say it until this year's is out of the oven, but I'm starting to get it dialed in pretty good. The only problem is baked potato goes with prime rib but I've only got 1 oven and the recipe I use does not allow for opening the oven so I have to settle for a microwaved baked potato for the first meal and then reheated prime rib with subsequent meals. I've got a wood-burning stove out in the shed and I've considered baking potatoes in it, but I'm not ready to cross that bridge yet.

Somewhere, recently, we talked about 1990s tribute albums and I forgot why I love "If I Were A Carpenter" and "Saturday Mornings" but have forgotten about "KISS My Ass". So I fired it up on YouTube.

Jeebus.

It starts out well enough, with Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Wonder(!?) doing "Deuce" and Garth Brooks' "Hard Luck Woman," but dag.

First problem: KISS doesn't have that many great songs. The truth of the matter is their strength is like the Greatful Dead: They put on an amazing live show. So pretty soon you're looking at the playlist and counting the minutes until you get to Toad the Wet Sprocket doing "Rock & Roll All Night (And Party Every Day)". Because that and "Detroit Rock City" are the big KISS songs. And you remember Toad the Wet Sprocket being a notable band. And then it gets there. And they do an upbeat rocker as a blissed out stoner funeral dirge. It literally kills the album. Shut off before the 2nd verse. Christmas Day and nothing to do, so I'm firing up to get through the rest of the album and they fuck up "Dr. Love" and "Strutter." Neither's a particularly good song, but if you tear into them with energy and keep the momentum going, they're fine.

Ah well, that's about it.

For NOW...

[edit] Oh thank FUCK The Mighty Mighty Bosstones did not fuck up "Detroit Rock City." Too bad they didn't start with it and end with a non-shitty cover of "Rock & Roll All Night."

Thinking about "FRIENDS." It was interesting, having it on as I was living that period of my life, but now I'm wondering what it would've been like if I'd been old when it aired. Was it better, being able to relate directly to what they were going through or would it have resonated more, having experienced that decades ago?

Saturday evenings, the local classical station does their "Men on Film" show, where they showcase movie music. Today they were doing John Williams and music from the "Star Wars" films and I turned on about half way through the "Star Wars" main title. And damn.

For my money "Superman: The Movie" is John Williams high point. But listening to the "Star Wars" main title really makes you appreciate what he did for that movie. It almost makes me 8 again, in a little single screen theater in the summertime, watching that star destroyer rumble past.

*I can't remember what the real name is.

Older people at the time would just point at the screen and yell "THERE'S NO WAY THESE LITTLE SNOTS COULD AFFORD THESE HUGE APARTMENTS IN NYC!!"

Funny story: I actually felt that way too. I was stationed in SoCal 2000-2002, so I'd go up to L.A. on weekends to do tourist stuff. One time I did the Warner Brothers Studio tour. It was the most expensive, but well worth the money. One of the things we got to see was the "FRIENDS" soundstage. It was set up with the apartments and that "the camera adds 10#" trope? It must apply to sets as well. Joey and Chandler's apartment, in particular, was TINY. You can't believe how small it is in person, compared to how it looks on TV.

I'm sure it was. But from a real NYC living perspective, those apts were both spacious 2-BR.

Many studio apts were/are the size of Joey's bedroom. Kitchen counter on top of the bathtub.
