Why were the special effects in Star Trek V so SHITE?

I want to smell dark matter
I MEAN, didn't Voyage Home make LOTS AND LOTS OF money? So why did they give Shatner a budge of FIFTY PENCE for Final Frontier?

FINE NOBODY GIVE ME A SERIOUS ANSWER EVER I'LL GO THROUGH MY WHOLE LIFE NOT KNOWING THE ANSWERS TO THE BIG QUESTIONS

Ok serious answer.

They had a budget of around 35 million, pretty good in those days, Shatner got 5 Million to star, due to their mutal contracts, Nimoy got the same, Deforest got 1 Mill, and another Mill was distributed among the lesser cast.

Add to that another couple of Mill that Shatner picked up for writing and directing, a large fee to get Jerry Goldsmith to provide the same godam music he uses in every trek film, and your left with a very small special effects budget.

For the sequances he wanted ILM simply wanted too much money, the studio wouldnt give more money, so they looked around for a cheap effects house, the one tehy found promised good effects but didnt deliver.

Years later the effects could have easily been replaced for teh DVD for around 1 mill, but the studio wouldnt cough up, of course the Shat could have paid himself, but didnt.

He also blew the budget on quite a few big shots like the shuttle crashing into the hanger early on and that contributed to there being less to go around. It was all spent before the end of principle photography.

That's what I've heard anyway.

The shuttle crashing scene was the one I was thinking looked particularly crap...I mean it got caught in a big net or some shite!

IT'S FUNNY HOW DAVID WARNER WAS IN TWO CONSECUTIVE MOVIES PLAYING DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. If you find things like that funny. I don't.

And then in TNG

I think the rock monster looks cool, although I don't really get what it had to do with Spock's half brother and god.

It was so Kirk could get his rocks off.

Besides its a rock monster, you can beat it with paper
