Wimbledon 2010

Not sure there's many Tennis fans here, but...

There is a match going on between Nicolas Mahut of France and John Isner of USA. It has just become the longest match played in the history of the game. They've been at it for over 10 hours - the final set is currently 59-58 to Isner with Mahut to serve. This set alone has been going on for 7 hours!

I've been watching it since 5.30pm - about 3 and a half hours ago when it was 30-30 in the final set.

The Wimbledon crowd are fucking pathetic. It's 59-59 and 10 past 9 in the evening. The sun's gone in, they've been on the court for hours and hours, play gets suspended, and they start slow hand clapping and booing before then clapping and cheering. Grow the fuck up.

I saw when Federer nearly lost to That Guy but then That Guy injured his groin. That sucked for That Guy.

Yeah, that's a kick in the nuts, isn't it?

I've not been tuning in so far. Wimbledon for me always a bit like BB. I don't take much notice to begin with, just barely remembering a couple of people's names, then get into it properly once it's got going.

I'll definitely watch if Djokovic is in it this year.

I heard Isner on sports radio today. Guy was pretty stoic for somebody who just made history. Gotta wonder about two guys so balls-to-the wall they can go for ten hours in the first round...THAT's dedication to the sport.

Maybe they arranged it beforehand to get attention.

Did you know that every year there's an "Official Poet" of Wimbledon? I heard him on NPR yesterday.

Which is more surprising, that there's a Wimbledon Poet, or that a conservative like me listens to NPR?

I don't know what NPR is, so the other.

Having an official poet is just the sort of poncy behaviour I'd expect from Wimbledon.

NPR - National Public Radio, which is fairly nonpartisan and likes to show how stupid politics are in general, but conservatives try to kill it (and public television) regularly by gutting its funding because it's taxpayer-funded yet no one party can control the message. SHOCK!

Oh, so it's like the BBC.

Actually quite a bit. I find when I can't get my news from NPR, BBCWorld makes a very satisfying substitute. The state of American News Media is sometimes horrifying, and I mean that from both political parties

So, in light of today's events, a question: which is better for a guy like Isner--to play in a historic match that will be remembered forever, but is relatively unimportant to the tournament itself? Or to conserve strength and try to get into later rounds? Obviously, with the scoring structure he'd have been done by losing the match, but if it gassed him so badly it was essentially the same outcome. Now they say he may have to pull from doubles competition too...
