Wrestling?

Really enjoyed WrestleMania this year, even if the event felt like a mixed bag and a bit light on those quintessential “WrestleMania” moments.

It was still a lot of fun, with Night 2 comfortably beating out Night 1 on match quality alone. Night 1 was still good, but yeah. Not to say Night 2 didn't have its issues. It came out of the gates flying, and the first three matches were great. Even felt that their VT and ad stuffing was a little less pronounced. Logan vs. AJ brought it back down; I struggled to care about that one, and then the egregious time-wasting became a thing in the back half. But overall, I was happy with the two nights. Still think it's really odd Rock wasn't there. The whole angle felt like he was a key player, so for him to totally no-show and not get a mention (outside VTs) was odd. Felt like there might have been some creative differences backstage because for him to not be involved and not even attend was telling.

What else? The women's triple threat opener was a standout, with Iyo Sky retaining her title. Iyo winning was great. Blew Charlotte and Tiff from Night 1 out of the water.

Wholesome.

Bronn Breakker's match was way more fun than I was anticipating and a great showcase for him. I get it now. Set design was peak this year as well, which is always appreciated. Happy with Dom winning the Intercontinental title. Anything that gives him licence to be an insufferable heel is gold on this guy.

Joe Hendry was a great pop and fun moment. Wasn't a total squash but wasn't really meant to be a serious match either. Good fun.

Always pop for Austin, but this appearance felt pretty pointless. Without the crash kerfuffle, this would go down as one of the most forgettable Austin appearances at a WrestleMania. Nobody even got stunned! But the crash kerfuffle did happen, so this actually is memorable after all!

Main event was…fine? John Cena's record-breaking 17th world title win is on the books, and the match was perfectly serviceable, with John looking conditioned (spray-on hair included) and strong going in. There was no blowing up or anything like that. Still, the ending was paced badly. The Travis Scott thing didn't really work for me because WWE has not told me in storytelling why I should care about this guy at all. Still feel the ending was different a few days ago, and Rock might have taken his ball and gone ho…to Hawaii.

On reflection, it might actually be between Austin hitting a Karen, Drew social media trolling or Orton's mystery opponent for the best WrestleMania moment this year.

Also, Wacky deserves props for damn near predicting most of the show results and events!

As an aside, I've always wanted to go to a WrestleMania live, but that is always in the context of being right at ringside. When the reality of going to one of these shows is you pay 400 bucks for this:

Watching at home with your own snack buffet and a couple of Steveweisers really isn't too bad after all!

Night 1 for the most part was nothing special until the main event. YEETMAN just isn't convincing as a top guy at all, I don't care how much people like saying his dumb word. I knew he'd win so I'm fine with that, but having Gunther tap out after a few seconds in a choke was really dumb.

Naomi was good in the match with Jade. Jacob Fatu/LA Knight was good. TIffy/Charlotte was absolutely not the blowout great match Charlotte needed to silence her critics.

Main event was a great match as you'd expect with the three guys in there in the WM main event. Heyman getting his arm stuck in Roman's balls was hilarious.

Night 2 was better, especially at the start. First two hours were great with the opening women's match probably my favourite match of the weekend. Very happy Iyo won. Drew was great again. Dom winning was entertaining! AJ/Logan bored the shit out of me though. Becky returning was a good moment even though the ring was covered in feathers for the whole match. Then Cena/Cody...it was going fine (apart from Cena's usual weak-looking offense) unti the fucking match paused for five fucking minutes for Travis Scott to SLOWLY stroll to the ring. Who gives a fuck about him? Where's The Rock? What was Scott's plan, to slap Cody? The fuck? It really pissed me off! Then the finish makes Cody look like a FUICKING DUMBASS as he refuses to hit Cena with the belt then gets pinned himself after one belt shot. The fans are going to completely turn on him soon.

What struck me after was how little there was in the name of surprises (other than Iyo winning) or anything out of the ordinary or wacky between matches. It just went video package, ten minute entrance, match, repeat for both nights. Even the Austin thing, as hilarious as it was, was a complete accident! Where's PETE ROSE getting tombstoned or whatever!?

But yeah I enjoyed it, didn't really get tired either night until AJ's age caught up with him (should have had a SHEAMUS match instead, fella) I don't regret staying up.

The lack of off the wall and zany happenings definitely hurt this one. I miss the days when there would be some backstage drama of some sort that would evolve over the night, but with how tightly coordinated all their ads and VT bullshit is, we seem to get fewer and fewer fun angles alongside the matches on these shows. And in general, there seemed to lack celeb participation (I'll get to Travis) which is usually not a bad thing but at WM feels weird. I know, the PPVs are more about the matches than angles, but there used to be a better balance. Again, I enjoyed this WM quite a bit but this stuff is noticeable.

I'm interested to see if we get any leaks about what went down with Rock and why he wasn't there because if the planned finish was a Travis Scott undertaker level entrance just for him to look gormless and try and slap Cody then what the fuck is HHH doing besides writing hour long acceptance speeches for awards he gives himself?

I'll stick on the Solomonster Sounds Off review of both nights and see what he has to say.

Rock's explanation, which really doesn't explain anything, of course:

"Where do we go from there" makes no sense. It's WrestleMania! That's where you pay things off!

I'd rather watch Logan and AJ on repeat.

What I don't get is: what did they expect? Was the plan to show this on tv at some point? They must have known it would be the dirt-worst unfunny racist shit that Hinchcliffe specialises in.

Jinder Mahal isn't even in the WWE anymore!
